swapping starter drives

hey everyone. i've got an f-head starter and an earlier l-head starter. the bendix drive (ratcheting part) is worn out on my l-head starter. does anyone know if i'd be able to take apart the starter drive on the f-head starter and use it on the l-head starter?

i know the nose part of the shaft that goes into the bellhousing is different. but wouldn't i be able to use that and the gear from the l-head starter and the ratcheting part from the f-head starter?
