Ok, this may sound like a silly question but here it goes. What is the maxium speed a 1978 CJ5 258 engine can run (all stock) without over stressing the engine. I want to attend a show but have to go highway.

Unless you have changed the differential gears out to something much lower, you should have no problems maintaining highway speeds without "stressing" the engine too bad.

With mine, I probably run around 3 grand at 55-60 in fourth gear.

I used to run mine at 70-80 on the interstate in it's current form except the EFI without any problems.

I've run mine with a 232 at 70mph several times. It didn't sound like it was hurting any, but it sure kills fuel mileage.

I wouldn't run it faster then 3500 rpm for any extend periods of time. With that said i used to run mine at 3200 for 5 hours at a time, other than getting 10MPG it was fine(around 78mph). The owners manual says the engine will consume more oil at speeds above 65mph so just check the oil a little more often.
