I am having a terrible time finding a distributor cap for my prestolite IAY 4401 distributor. The auto parts store has gotten me three different caps for various Willys distributors and none is correct. One of them does have a base that fits my housing, but my retaining clips are long suggesting that the tabs on the cap should be high. However this cap has the tabs low near the base. The one with the tabs high, does not fit the housing i.e. different diameter. The third they ordered was much too small in diameter. Would someone with this distributor please post a photo? At this point I am just going to lower the attachment points for the spring clip, retainers and use the cap that fits the housing. But it would seem that a cap must be available. I was told that this distributor came from a mid-50's CJ-5. Could it be from an M-38 or M38a1 that used some totally different cap for rough service?

Military caps are totally different than civilian so it couldn't be one of them. I'd contact one of the parts suppliers listed in the sticky section, they should have what you need.

Sorry the part numbers didn't work out from your other thread. I can't post a pic till this eve. If you post one, I'd bet someone could ID it. Just guessing your dist has the wrong tag number on it, or, someone modified it to use a diff cap and/or clips ...

    Homebrew2,
Your part numbers were the ones that came the closest. It is the holddown clip issue that doesn't work. I will post a pick tonight when I get home.

Duh! On my part. The brackets for the cap attachement clips were upside down making the clip to high for the cap. Once I flipped them over, the cap fit just fine.
