    Hey everyone,
Been hanging out reading and learning all I can for a while, this place rocks. I'm working on a 1971 CJ5 with the 225, T14 and D18. Well I have it down to the frame and the gearbox and t-case on the bench. A couple questions I need answered if someone knows and doesn't mind. On the gearbox top toward the rear there is a couple of switches, I know one is the reverse light switch but would like to know what the other is for. It's on the left rear corner of the top. And also the one I really hate to ask but every time I do a search all I come up with is ID-10-T (that one you have to look at without the dashes), but oil should I put back in it does the t-case use the same oil?

Wecome aboard! Per the Factory Service Manual; "On late production T-14A transmissions the back-up light switch is threaded into the right rear corner of the cover housing and is activated by the movement of the reverse shift rail". That is how mine is equipped... The tranny and T-case do use the same oil, as there are crossover passages connecting the two. For a complete change of fluid, I do drain both the tranny and T-case separately, but fill them up using just the tranny fill hole. Never had any problems... For me 75W90 works great.

The second switch is probably TCS - transmission controlled spark.

It's possible a '71 would have it - IIRC '72 CA 304s did. It could also be a shift top from a later T-14.

Thanks for all the input. It appears to be actuated when it goes into third gear. When I said it was a T14 I am just assuming it is because that's what the PO told me. I know it's not a T90. I'll try the pictures. It's the switch on the left in the picture. And for reference I also took a picture of the numbers cast on the side of the case.

    Yep, that's a T-14 and a TCS switch.

    Thanks everyone,

I guess that I can assume that I don't have to run with this TCS switch since it wasn't hooked up when I took ownership of the jeep. When I removed the wiring harness I (what was left of it) there was no wire going to it and no loose wires around it. It was running when I got it. Just what does this switch do any way? Just curious.

Turns off the vacuum advance in all but top gear. The switch should be open in third gear.

I'd bet that tthe top of your transmission has been replaced with a later model at some time or another. The reasonm I say that is that I have an original factory service manual for a 1971 cj5 and it makes no mention of this switch in the transmission section at all or in the ignition section either.

X2 - My '69 has the TCS on the xmission, but I know it is not the original xmission. PO replaced it. TCS has never been connected - runs fine.
