thanks for all of your advice everybody. I decided to go ahead and rebuild the stock transmission...kind of expensive for the stock 3 speed, but at least everything will bolt back up. I have so many other small items that I need to put some $$ into, so I will keep it stock for now while I work on brakes, suspension (sagging really bad, the Front DS hits bellhousing on small bumps), lights, gauges, seat belts, roll cage, ect....I think fixing all of these things will be a better way to spend my money, especially if I decide to sell it in the end for a later model CJ. Thanks guys,

    Brian

Check with Herm on your transmission - IIRC he has a pretty good price for a turnkey T-90. www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com

I'm building a 57 cj6 at the moment. The little :v6: is a great engine and the dana 18 transfer case is a really stout little booger. Read the artical in the latest Jp titled best trasfercase ever. $100 dollars for a sm465 isn't a bad price, I'd stay with your dana 18 and do a trans swap now if you want to do one at all. The rest of your drivetrain will hold up fine. Herm just had a new addapter manufactured for the sm465 which is the one I'd go with. Swap in a ford t-18 or a sm465 and then wheel it some. I've done both swaps if you want more info PM me. A 4 speed is one of the best mods you can make, and the old jeeps hold up better then most people think. The cj6's are really great, have fun!

Well...unfortunately for now, I think I am going to have to stick with the stock 3 speed...as I already gave it to the trans shop when I made my previous post earlier this afternoon... :(. Its ok though... Its not going to be that expensive to have it rebuilt...probably should have just gone with the sm465 after all...but kinda to late now...Looking at the bright side, I will have a drivable CJ in a few days! so I am happy...I know that the stock trans isn't very good but it should work for the time being. With all the work I need to do on my CJ in the next year or so...probably won't be wheeling it very hard, and I definitely don't need to drive it on the highway or anything, so the trans should last a little while. I will keep you guys posted, my next step is to see what is actually going on with my engine, and then try to get the gauges to work, none of them currently work except for the spedo. I am going to worry about what I really want to do with the trans and axles when winter comes back around, as I will have it garaged for a few months.

for build ideas, do a search on 'project hatari'.

the older jeeps are very good offroad since their narrower, lighter and lower factory gearing. why not get it running then wheel it before you make all the big purchases, you might not need them.

this kinda sucks...so my plan was to get it up and running as you said with the sock trans and such...the trans shop tore everything down, ordered everything it needed to have it rebuilt...and I just got a call saying that they noticed a crack in the case...so I am back to square one..I dont know, I think I will just purchase a rebuilt 465 from herm or Novak with an adapter to the D18, just hope I can get it quick. I will let you guys know whats up. Thanks!

I think it is all going to work out great, its actually a good thing that my stock transmission is trash, I talked to hermtheoverdriveguy.com and he said that he has SM420's in stock, and he can ship one to me with the correct BH and I can have it by wed or thurs, so that would be great! and he is much much cheaper than Novak. Thanks for the link, I will let you know when I get it in.
