My engine builder says I need new connecting rods (old ones are fused to the pistons). Is there a stronger/better connecting rod I can use since I'm buying 6 anyway? Anyone have a source for these parts?

231 oddfire rods will work, but you will have to have them balanced to the 225 assembly. They are also better rods.

TA Performance shows them, as does Kanter. TA is a little cheaper, ca $200/set. Both specify exchange.

You could look around for some 231 OF rods as Mike suggests, and then have your shop recondition them. Try wrecking yards or look for a 231 core private party.

not as simple as I hoped. Guess I'll start searching Ebay, all the junk yards around me scrap anything older than 10 years old.

Herm mentioned to me that he had a full 225 shortblock in good condition. You might give him a call. 360.256.3843

Is the shop doing the complete rebuild? You might have a talk with them and see if they can put a little more effort into separating the rods and pistons. Sounds a little fishy to me (like they just don't want to do it for their rate), but it might be legit.

I'd hope that the shop I used was resourceful enough to figure out a way to get them apart, or at least would make an effort to find some other rods for me.

What exactly is the problem? There are two types of piston pin retention that I know of - some kind of mechanical fastener (button, snap ring), and press-fit. Which is the 225? You might try another shop to see if they can or are willing to try and separate them.

<edit> You might also try the one or more of the online Buick sites - either for parts or advice.

The site is quite reputable (they've built 2 other engines for me). The engine has been sitting for close to 20 years and he said the existing rods aren't worth the effort. He said he could get some rods, but told me to look around to see if I could find a deal. I think I'm going to order from Kanter as they don't specify a core.
