Rear mount radiator

    Been searching and reading all over the intraweb and I still have a couple questions. Is necking the coolant lines down to 1" ID to much of a drop compared to the 1.5 and 1.75 they are standard. Reason being I can get 1" heater hose for just over a 1 dollar a foot compared to almost 7 bucks a foot for the 1.5 stuff. Ive looked at using exhaust pipe like some people do, but I just dont have the room to run it under the jeep, it would have to be routed outside the frame rails and some skids would have to made to keep the pipes safe. Any tips or ideas???

    I would look into using CPVC water pipe. I ran a rear rad for a while before me last revision and used exhaust pipe and found that you get a lot of rust in the system. The other thing I found out was that at certain speeds you can not push or pull air threw the rad. Now I know that there are quit a few rigs running a rad in the rear that work and I could get mine to do so also just not at every speed(I run mine on the freeway also).

    If mine does see any street time it wont be going real fast, maybe 45-50 at most for a short distance.

    I would suggest bending up some metal tubing for lines and then connect the rubber line at the ends. It will be cheaper and more durable. A little more work but you wouldnt have to worry about repalcing that much rubber is something tears into it (which will end up happening)

    So say I use pipe is 1" ID too small? There is no space under the jeep to run 2 more 1.5" pipes, without havig a hundred bends and it being in the way of everything. So its going to be run through firewall, down the pass side of the tranny tunnel to the radiator. Thats why Im trying to keep the size down as much as possible.

    I think you should be fine, because those pipes will also act like a heat sink, and you will have more surface area to cool off the fluid. Is this for the flatty? the 360? I think a call to a radiator shop may yeild better flow calculations to cooling vs. tube size. Possibly you could run along the frame and come up throguh the rear bed right where the radiator is.

    The radiator shops around here are terrible, Id get a better answer calling 411. Heres a pic of the underside showing the room I have to work with..first pic is with no exhaust pipes, second pic has exhaust filling the holes on each side. So that leaves running the coolant hoses down the outside of the frame rail or through the passenger compartment. If I run it on the outside of the frame it will be in the way of the mounting bolts for the skid plate and I'll need to build some sort of guards to protect them from getting crushed.

    This picture kinda shows it, the engine sits so low that a mechanical fan wont pull enough air, and even with a shroud it wont help much, since 1/3 of the fan sits below the bottom of the rad. There wasnt enough room to an elec. fan behind it without hitting. Plus the largest I could fit with the saginaw box was only 19x22" and from what I've read and been told that is barely big enough to cool it in the most ideal of situations. So I got a 19x28 now that should be plenty big.

    I would say go to a single exhaust. Not as "cool" as a setup but convenient. Man that isnt much room to work with.I would try to run as close to normal at least a 2 inch ID just becuase you will do some much fab work to try and make it work and only hate yourself if the 1 inch doesnt cool enough. Maybe time for a V6 ;)

    And this one show how low the engine is in the frame rails. Note the fan I guess it was doomed not to work from the get go :oops:, but it was one of those deals, I really didnt want to rear mount the rad. and was going to try and make it work . But it didnt and now Im willing to give up that space so I dont have to worry bout overheating anymore.

    This might not work but here is the first thought that has run through my head. Why not a total of 4 1in ID lines? You know 2 going and 2 returning. I would think it would be easier to find room to run those.

    Thats a thought...any ideas on how to join them up?Maybe make an adapter out of steel with a 1.75 big tube and have 2 small 1" tubes welded to it?

    Hey I am not the fabricator I am just the idea guy R)

    That sounds about right then hammer the pipe over the two tubes and weld it up nice or something like that. I would play around with a few ideas and run water through them to see which one seems to flow the best.

    Don't you just hate the aftermath of all those modifications,I know I do.For every 1 thing you change 4 other things won't work right anymore!Sorry but I don't have any good ideas to help,you know how bad my cooling problems are!

    Don't go to a 1" pipe Jason, when you double the pipe size you increase the flow volume by 4X. So in effect you are cutting the volume of flow about 60%.
