I have been searching the forum for anyone who may have tried to tap holes in the bottom of the windshield hinge to mount a stock mirror.... My 79 does not have the holes for the mirror mount, I am going to attempt to drill, but I thought I would ask if anyone has attempted such a thing? Basically, I'm too cheap to buy a replacement hinge with the holes already tapped. I bolted the mirror arm to the upper door hinge as a temporary thing, but it looks dorky.

That's strange. I didn't think it was legal to sell a car in the US without a LHS outside rear view mirror. The RHS mirror was optional.

I bought mine as a parts car, but it did come with clear title. The jeep was missing a lot of small parts when I got it. The hinges may have come off another donor jeep. Driveline etc all match numbers, but a lot of small stuff has been replaced over time. This jeep came from Ohio, but it may have spent time in Canada. It was one of the ones that was built there.

If you have the mirror mount brackets use them to trace out a template and use it to mark and drill the mounting holes, tapping should be easy then,,,will look as good as factory

Yeah, I have the original mirror mount brackets too. Think I'll use a punch too- last time I tried to drill a hole (for the fender flares) it walked right on up the sheetmetal .

Drove it yesterday, and smelled gas- opened the hood and noticed that the return line off the carb is leaking.
