Tee-Hee. Well...... I found it to be a giant PITA myself. I've found the easiest way is to pull the steering wheel. Disconnect the column bracket from the dash, go under the hood ( or through the floor ) and loosen the column tube clamp, then remove the column tube. Go back under the hood and pull the steering box side cover. Using a pry tool, pry against the end of the steering sector shaft. Pulling it toward you. This should give the worm gear shaft enough clearance to clear the sector shaft. Now, remove the three bolts holding the upper steering box cover. You should now be able to firmly yet gently pull the steering shaft up out of the box. Good luck and have fun.

PS. I just did mine a few weeks ago in the parking lot at work in the snow. It was about 10 degrees out. I broke a pitman arm.
