I'm in the middle of rebuilding my 63 CJ5 and have the trans and transfer case out, I cannot get the front of the transfer case off it's like the bearing on the main shaft is stuck. Is there something I am missing that is holding this on? I know there is a snap ring in there that I have no idea how I can get that off but don't think that is the reason it will not come apart. Any ideas?

i'm guessing you are talking about splitting the t-case from the tranny? if so, on the back of t-case, remove the 5 bolts holding on the cover (if no overdrive or pto). inside there is a gear on the shaft coming from the tranny. remove cotter pin and the nut. i believe its 1 5/16. then just pop the gear off and they will split apart (after removing the outer case bolts of course).

and if you talking about the front yoke and cap of the t-case then i would say check out novak adapt. to much info for me to type:rofl:. lots of rebuilding info and instructions there. and the best advice i got, buy the service manual. mine was like $50 with shipping. well worth the price. good luck:beer:

Have you read Rick Stiver's Dana 18 rebuild guide? It might have something in there.
