Good day to everyone I have a 1969 commando with the 225 motor and a t 14 trans. This is only a half cab and I am trying to keep it stock as possible. I have the single leaf in rear and the 2 leaf in front, rear leaf is 2.5 and the front is 2.25 inches, I am going to do a spring over to add several inches to the jeep what are some issues I might have while doing this. Plus while doing this do I need to worry about the angle of the shafts will they need to be modified, brake lines, steering or anything else. Also should I place a add a leaf to the springs to bring a arch back or not.

If anyone has done this I would really thank you for a cheat sheet of the steps.

I guess the spring-over is conversion pretty popular for Jeepsters, since there aren't any easy/cheap aftermarket springs available. If it were mine, I'd have springs made that gave me the lift I wanted, and leave it spring-under. For the fronts, you should be able to use CJ or Wrangler lift springs. Look at the article about Wrangler springs in the tech section. For the rears, you may be able to find springs that will fit if you are willing to move the front hangers some. Otherwise, you could have them made.

Not meaning to be negative, but there's a lot more to a spring-over than you might realize... if you search the forums you'll find a lot of discussion, both pro and con.

How much lift are you thinking of?

    Also, Welcome from Boston!

I am not looking for much, like I said I would like to try to keep this little thing as close to orginal as possible. If I could get 2 to 3 inches out of it I would be happy, just enough to maybe get a set of 31x9.50 under it. I have talked with a guy who is going to weld the new berches on for me so that has been talking care of already. I have already spent to much on this, I had to get a new t14 for this which I am waiting on. So while I had it up on stands I figured I will go ahead and and do the springs also, plus the brakes all the way around. So I am woundering if I am going to need to extend anything out to have this done. Thank you very much for the help on this.

I have a set of 3" Alcan springs that we are putting under a '73 to put 33" tires under.

FWIW - I also recommend against spring over setups. I have several buddies that did it, most have converted back as it made the rig(s) to unstable. That would also depend on what type of driving you do with yours.

    X 3 on spring over.

Lots of reasons to not do spring over.
Should be left to those who fab most of thier jeep.

I am doing spring over ( SOA ) in back which isnt as hard but still has some drawbacks axle wrap ect.

On the front I am using wrangler springs spring under (SUA) 3.5 BDS 2.5 wide for stability and ride. Some fabbing.

Both the front and back springs have the center pin offset.
So their insnt much you can just bolt on.
85 toyota rear springs can work on the front.
And Alcan makes very good SUA lifts for Commandos. $$$ though.

Try to stay under 4inchs of lift to not have new problems you mentioned.

    I love this site.

But for specific Commando, Jeepster ??
    Go here.
Just search springs and you will have volumes on your rig.

Can you guys tell me what the length of the front and back springs are. I would like to look for a pair of springs that I can use for the Commando.

I can measure them when I get home tonight. I believe the '73 and '69 spring lengths should be the same.

    Ok
    Here you go.

    Rears:55.25"s total,

Front eye to center pin 23.25"s.

Rear eye to center pin 32"s.

    2.5"s wide.

    Front:44 inch's total.

Front eye to center pin 19"s.

Rear eye to center pin 25''s.

    Appr. 1.75 wide

I have mine all apart and yj's half on so I know this is correct.

As you can see they are uncommon.

Here is a site with pics of Toyota springs on front but it is SOA.

My 73 came with the spring over and so far the biggest issue I am having is finding shocks. The frame mounts are in the orig local so when the shocks where put on they became almost fully compressed. I get about 2 or 3" of travel.
I need to find really short shocks or some way to move mounting points.

Or drop it back to stock height.
