alright, i got my new seal in place, and it looks much better than the other one did. BUT, when i went to install the yoke on the transfer case i can now completely bind up the transfer case by torquing on the nut on the output. what's the deal?? do i need to take out some shims? i set the freeplay to about 2 thousandths when i rebuilt it, but would the torque on the yoke play into that number? and, if i take some of the shims out don't i have to reset everything underneith there?

it's a big bag of problems that i wasn't anticipating, and the answer ain't real clear to me.

    Nevermind....
Did you put the front on first and then set the freeplay?

The felt fits behind the yokes. They do not help with leaks so much as keep stuff from getting in the seal. I preoil them to help them "wear" in.

i don't personally have any pics of pulling the seals out, but all you would see from my pictures would be a seal butchered with a seal puller to the point that it finally gave up and popped out. that's mainly the output seals, the shifter reail seals popped right out for me, and the felt should come out with the yoke, just scrape it off and put in some more. also, before putting in the other seals it's recommended that you lube up the walls a little bit to help it slide down, and the same with the rubber part itself (or that's what i've been told).

Bringing this one back from the dead...

Similar problem with my transfercase install. I never rebuilt or replaced any of the bearings, all I did was take it apart, and clean it, and put all new seals in including the felt disks. The front Yoke is stuck tight. I haven't tried turning it yet cause I didn't want to break anything.

Is it just the felt seals causing this thing to bind up?? all the original shims and everything internal are still there. --no extra parts left over;)

-----Shoulda tried turning it by socket first. Just the felt seal. I'll oil the back seal.
