Should there be anything around the transmission cover to seal it up or should the cover just bolt metal to metal? Mine had some type of puddy stuff that had never set up.

Theres not supposed to be any sort of gasket there but I have used stick-on weather stripping around the edges to cut down on the drafts.

Napa sells 3M strip caulk for a good price and you get enough to do the job 100 times if needed :) I've used it to plug firewall holes, fix weatherstripping (it goes behind the strip), seal patch panels, etc. Good stuff, never hardens, cleans up pretty easy.
