Rented a transmission jack for tomorrow. Going to try and get the T90/D18 stuck back in the A1. Here's the question, is it easier to mount the crossmember to the T90/D18 and stick the whole thing in, or use the jack to get the T90/D18 all bolted up to the bell housing, use the jack the hold it and then figure out how the get the crossmember on?

i used the tranny jack to install the trans/transfer. then used the floor jack to hold the unit in place while i installed the crossmember.

I've always put them back joined together & mounted to the cross member but then again I was using a regular floor jack, the tranny/xfer balance perfectly on the cross member & it gave me something reasonably flat to stick the jack under.

Put the crossmember on last, with the jack holding the trans/transfer case up until the crossmember is securely bolted back in. Sometimes the floor jack is better for this part of the job, it won't be in the way as much as the tranny jack.

Tip: Get some long (10" or so) bolts the same size as the tranny-to-bellhousing ones and cut the heads off. Thread them into the top two bolt holes in the bell housing and use these to help guide the whole banana into place. These bolts help to take the weight so you don't accidentally bend the input shaft by letting the assembly hang on the tip of the shaft. That sucker is heavy, it WILL bend the shaft if you aren't careful!

I run a floor jack on the engine and the tranny jack without the crossmember. Long bolts like Steve said. Then the main thing is to ease it in while watching the distance all around to keep it square.

An extra hand wiggling the rear yoke helps to get the splines lined up some times while you have slight preasure pulling it together.

I've done it both ways. Do it without cross member on. Seems easier. Hardest thing for me was getting the transmission and transmission mount bolt on the crossmember lined up. Recommend getting someone to help you.

Hmmm, well, now I'm wondering if I should try it myself. $25 a day jack rental. Maybe I should wait until I get some help. Tick me off if I can't get it done tomorrow and have to rent the thing again when I have some help....hmmmm...

    I agree with the group . . .

I used a jack AND hung my SM465 from an engine crane. Not only did it make manipulating the 200+ lb pig alot easier, once I got the trans mounded I just pulled off the jace and bolted up the cross member with the crane holding up the trans-TC.

If all is done correctly it shouldn't take you too long, even by yourself, but it goes much easier with 2 people. Biggest thing is lining up the splines with the clutch plate, flywheel. Once you get the tranny on the jack and the tranny lifted up level into position. get underneath from the rear of the jeep and with your feet forward gently push the transmission in and "rock" it gently and slowly side to side to help engage the splines. Once engaged use a floor jack or two to hold the rear of the engine and the rear of the transfer case while you bolt up the crossmember. I've done it several times by myself:oops: but if you don't want to risk renting the jack twice,... get a neighbor to help.

DO NOT TRY TO PULL THE TRANSMISSION AND BELL HOUSING TOGETHER WITH BOLTS (even a little bit)! It'll go if it's lined up right.

I did mine with the bell housing attached to the engine. Be sure to cover the top of the transmission with something to prevent foreign objects jumping into the transmission while your not looking!:oops:R)

Nevermind, I'll rent it. I'll get it done. It doesn't sound difficult, just awkward at most. If I need help, I'll get the wife out.

I did my Big Fat 465 three times over 3 weekends all by myself (may need to do it again) :(
Just be patient and don't force things. Pay attention and do things right the first time (my problems . . . humm . . . why is that pilot baring so large ??? . . . humm . . . are those flywheel bolts too long ????)
Good luck! You'll be glad you did it yourself (alone or with help) when you are done!

Alone works fine - do it alone now all the time. It just takes me 20mins with someone helping and @ 1.5 hrs by my self...

Pay attention to keeping the tranny square to the BH - even measurements on all 4 corners. A little preasure from the back with my feet on the tranny jack while I wiggle the rear output (make sure it's in gear  ) and it pops on real slick.

    Good Luck

when i replaced the clutch on my 89 yj, i bought a transmission jack that attaches to the floor jack. it was 50 bucks from jcwhitney from what i remember. the tilting mechanism didn't work too well though and it was tall, which works well for a jeep, but using it on a car in the future was out.

have a few jack stands within arms length ready when you're down there, just in case you have to prop or support something.
make sure you have a smooth floor to roll the transmission jack also. i was working on my cracked and very rough driveway and the wheels where getting stuck.

i also did the feet push like warloch...i never imagined enjoying installing the bellhousing bolts..

even measurements....from where to where? What am I measuring? When wiggling the rear output, are you talking about the output on the transfer case? The jack I got is pretty big. It was all I had to get it out of the back of the pickup. Darn thing weights close to 100 lbs I bet. Probably more then the T90/D18. Quick question on the throwout bearing...which way does it go? Big side towards the transmission or big side towards the clutch plate?

Measure at the corners of the tranny mount to the BH. If they are even, you are square (the eye can be decieved).

Wiggle output of Tcase (where the drive shaft mounts).

To - big side (the bearing that spins) to the clutch plate. The bearing rides on the splines of the preasure plate.

I put them in myself by hand. Tranny first, then put the floor jack under the tranny then put the t-case in. Seems to go easier for me that way.
