carb question

    Ok looks like I'm going to dig into my carb. I searched the forum already and just am not sure which route is the best way to go, should I rebuild my Carter that has 24k original miles or fore go all the headaches and just bolt up a Solex??Any help from the experienced? Thanks

    The Carter is easily rebuilt, just be sure you get the correct kit from :http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/ Usually the Carter will have worn a throttle shaft, causing air leaks. Otherwise a Solex is an easy replacement. It IS a little more cold blooded than the Carter, but is a bolt on replacement. I went the Solex route with my '56, love it after I got it dialed in.

    The Carter YF was used on lots of applications, and is fairly trouble free. If the carb only has 24K miles on it, it's very unlikely that the throttle shaft is worn.

    From what I've read in previous posts, the kit from TCS is the only one that has the proper bowl seal for the lifter link. Leaving out the bowl seal will make the carb seep gas. The later carbs appear not to need this seal, so maybe that's why most kits leave it out. (This is from memory of what I've read here - somebody will comment if it's not exactly right).

    If it were mine, I'd certainly take the Carter apart and clean it. Maybe the cheapy kit from your FLAPS would be good enough. Just don't throw anything away... old carb parts can be useful.
