I have been attempting to remove the filter from the air cleaner in my 2a. It hasn't been removed in I don't know how long. I loosened the wing nut on the bottom of the filter but it absolutely will not budge. I sprayed penetrating oil in it last night but it doesn't feel any different this morning. The manual showed it just pulling out. Am I missing something?

    Thanks,
    Denny

Most of them are a rusted in there after 50 years. I pulled the stocker out and run a K&N cone clamped to the angled stock airhorn piece.

If your refering to the cup on the bottom it shold just pop off when you loosten the hand screw it may need a whack with a hammer. If you mean the wire mesh inside im not sure if that is removeable. If it is i would love to know how because every filter i have encountered have been in there solid with no signs of budging.

The wire gauze inside is removable, it slides right out on mine. The bottom as stated by jeep2003 will come off, but may need a rawhide hammer to come off.

The bottom part comes off with no trouble. I am wanting to remove the mesh to make sure it isn't clogged up.

    Thanks for the replies

Sammy, do you have any pics of your air cleaner disassembled? That's interesting, because I've never heard anything other than they don't come apart. I know mine don't, I wonder if just the early ones did?

If yours doesn't come apart you should be able to rinse it out with mineral spirts. That should clean out anything that would be in there.

That's an Oakes air filter that Sammy has, my '48 CJ2A came with one just like it. They're much more rare than the Donaldson, but they can still be found.

That's what I had heard it was. I'm not wondering if it came off of a pickup on the farm or something.
Do you guys think it's salvageable with the rusted gauze in it?

Definitely keep it Sammy. You can use some very coarse steel wool to form layers of a new filter until you can finda better element to use.

People like to toss the old oil-bath air cleaners in favor of a "custom" paper element but in reality the oil-bath does a much better job in very dusty conditions. You just have to remember to change the oil and wash out the element after a particularly dirty run, just liek you should change the fluids after a deep stream crossing.

Oh I wasn't going to trash it or break down and go to a paper, I was just wondering if it is ok to use or I'm better off putting it in the memorabilia are and find another oil bath :)

    Sammy,
That oil bath air filter is correct for a '47 2a. Almost all MB/GPW's and CJ2a's up untill late '47 early '48 had the oaks filter. There are a few different designs but they all look kinda the same. Here is a sampleing from the 2A page. These are still fairly easy to find and are available repo as well. I'd just keep using it.
