I recently came across a free 1977 CJ7 21 gallon gas tank purchased from JC Wittney some years ago.

I am curious if this gas tank could be converted to be used in a relocation of my under seat to the rear location in my CJ6 and quite possibly what would be needed to do this conversion if its a possible project.

I'm am relatively new to Jeeps and am eager to learn all I can

I read Mikes blog concerning his conversion but I'm not sure how to translate it to this application

    Any help would be appreciated

The demensions are 26" wide 13" high 16.5" deep

If thats the one I am thinking of you are going to lose your departure angle. The last one I saw was on a 5 with 33in tires and it hung lower then the diff.

That stinks I was hoping that wouldnt be the case. Its about 13 inches tall. I wasn't sure how far I could tuck it up there.

Anything larger than the 15 thats out there that wont hang so low?

I just replaced the 'rear' tank in my 3A and ended up getting a custom one made. You can gain a little space by moving the mount points as high as possible. I moved one of the rear cross members to allow me to get an additional 4" of tuck. I also have a 2" body lift that allowed me more room.

This tank came with no parts. Would you happen to know what I'll need to make it work? I surfed the web to try and find some sort of schematic but couldn't find anything.

Check the '77 factory manual or parts book.

I need to set up my scanner again ... I'll try and get you the exploded drawing from the manual this afternoon.

What are you unclear about? The original tanks for these years were held in by the skid plate. Not sure about the oversize tank though. You should have a fill, vent (glug-glug for the filler), and vapor recovery outlets. The fuel pickup and return go through the sending unit, which fits in the top of the tank with an o-ring and locking ring. You should be able to get the filler hoses and filler neck from aftermarket sources.

Your pics seem to show additional fittings on the top of the tank that might have replaced the fuel pickup and return. It also looks like there is the lock ring setup Tim is talking about - I have seen these converted to just the guage setup in the past as well. The tubes on the side are the fill and fill vent.

If you need more info, I should be home this weekend and can walk you through some of it (I have several tanks in the shop) if needed. PM me and we'll see if we can hook up.
