So I've known about this problem for quite some time, but have been putting it off because so many others things needed to be fixed first just get my CJ running.

When I shift into 4L the front axle doesn't engage. The rear does, in the low range.
4H works just fine, including the front.
    2H works fine.

I know that I'm going to have to crack open the TC, but any ideas what I might be in for?

    Thanks

Before you crack open the case you may have found the mythical 2lo. Pull the shifter boot off and make sure you aren't hitting the body with the lever and not moving far enough to set the shift rail to engage the front axle in low.

Hmm, so I need to push it farther against the floor? It felt like it was practically on the floorboard.
(waiting for someone to say, "Duh!")

Replace it with a twin stick and then you have no more guessing games. :D

There is probalby a lot of slop in the shift linkage that is causing it to not engage the front.

yep, it ain't mythical, I use it all the time!

works great to make the tight trail turns without having to back up or burn up the clutch!

Yep, there was in mine. I can still find 2 lo, but the gears engage much better than before. I strongly reccomend it.

I had that problem to that there was so much slop that It wouldn't engage.

Mine was that way. Had to bend the TC shifter up to allow it to go down to 4L.

For the twin stick dana 20 people:
I did mine without removing the interlocks. Now I can't seem to get into low range on the front axle. Is there advantages to twin stick without removing the interlocks or should I drop the TC and pop the interlocks?

The knob will touch the top of the toolbox when you shift into 4L.

Front wheel drive only in low and high range is the only advantage. You have to decide if its worth it to you. I personally like having the choice and have used it on occasion.

Excellent. Its good to be back in good company. I'll see about tightening the linkage, although I don't think I've even tried pushing it to the floor.
    Thanks guys.

    I do love this Jeep.:driving:

I've got finals over the next week and then it'll be wrenchin' time.
