I first had this problem back in July and hasn't been an issue until yesterday. It seems this is a common problem after checking the board but I will go over the symptoms once more.

This progressively got worse but at first the engine would load up around 55mph, it would sputter and cough. I could still drive in 4th od. Later it would do it at slower speeds and by the time I got home I was limited to 20mph with no chance of hitting 3rd. During an idle you could wind the engine up to 3000rpms with no problem.

Going over inclines it would load up and sputter making me think the carb needs a rebuild, specifically the floats are bad. I have the 2bbl Rochester which is the stock carb (I think). I will check or replace the points too but the incline thing told me it was something to do with the carb.

I read some of the older threads on this problem. Most diagnosis lead to an intake leak or fuel clog. I know the fuel pump and filter or working properly.

My plan is to rebuild the carb and points anyway. Sound good?

    Check for manifold vacuum leaks.

It does sound like a lack of fuel.

Primary or secondary filter, pump, intake (in tank), pinched fuel line, vacuum leak.

Going up hill could be a power thing instead of an out of level thing.

Weak ignition can also cause lack of power - timing, coil, plugs & wires, points, timing.

    Just throwing things out.

    Let us know.

I'm thinking fuel delivery, check the simple stuff first such as fuel filter. IMHO carb floats either work, or they don't. Once they get filled up with fuel, they stop "floating" completely.

You might just remove the top of the carb and have a looksee in the bowl for crud and/or foreign matter covering the jets. If nothing seen, I would blow thru the jets anyway, check the float, reinstall the top of the carb, and go for a drive.

I agree with the two above, My 55 with the 134F head and Carter 938 SD Carb started stalling at and just above idle. When I had my foot in it ran ok. took the top off and it had a considerable amount of rusty silt from the old fuel tank in the bottom of the fuel bowl. It was enough to prevent the low speed jet from supplying enough fuel. A good cleaning and all was well. I did put a good inline filter between the fuel pump and the old tank untill I can replace the tank, It seems the fine brass screen in the original style fuel pump wont stop rust particles that fine.

Coil could also be failing as it heats up. Would die out under a load i.e. in overdrive, pulling a hill, hard acceleration. Swap it out, its an easy try.

mine would something simliar after driving for 40 min. I ended up turning the adjustable fuel regulator to 3psi instead of 2.5psi.

I took the advice of starting with the simple things first. I removed the fuel filter and bought a replacement. The old one was packed although I couldn't see inside. I tried blowing threw it with little luck while the new one was easy. Replaced it and took it for a drive and it works great now. I am so glad I didn't buy a new carb or replace other parts. Thanks.
