("57 CJ5) This may sound dumb. I removed the old exhaust system. It, for the most part broke off in my hands it had so much rust on it. Does the exhaust system get painted, could it get painted? Does it make any difference as far as rust goes? Does anybody have any opinion? Does anybody care? I am pressure washing the entire underbelly. You wouldn't believe the stuff that was under there. I am undercoating the tub, but I was just wondering about the exhaust system. Thanks. -G :coffee:

There are many good paints out there that are designed to withstand exhaust system temps, one of the best was a product called VHT. It should be available at any speed shop.

Regardless fo what paint you use, prep is the key to getting it to stay on there. I use a handful of shop rags and liberal amounts of lacquer thinner to get all the presering oil and gunk off before using painting. No primer is necessary with most of the high-temp paints.

Just watch the labels, there are different grades of paint designed for different temperature ranges. The highest one (good to 1200* or higher) is the one you want for exhaust work. ;)

If you have doubts about painting the exhuast there is also an exhaust tape/cloth wrap that helps reduce heat in the engine compartment and on your floor boards. You can find it at Summit racing online or some local part stores. good luck, I actually just pulled my body tub off yesterday and started what sounds like the same process of power washing the frame and engine. Didn't do the underside of the tub yet cuz it started getting kinda chilly here yesterday.

Yep. Modern materials will make the system last much longer. Same thing for the muffler. Modern exhaust systems can last as long as the rest of the car.

Realize that exhaust gases are corrosive, and you'd have to paint the pipes inside and out to be effective.

A suggestion presented to me by POR was to use a sponge dipped in the exhaust paint I bought from them tied to a cord and pull through the tubing. I'm sure it would work if you wanted to go to the trouble. The POR exhaust paint handles heat well (looks great on my manifolds). Unsure how it would take the corrosives but my guess is it would work well.:v6:

try getting your next exhaust made in stainless steel. it will last for ever.
it's expensive but worth every cent.
exhaust wrap is great stuff.......... but, having had a rally car for 10 years with exhaust wrap on it you must bear in mind that if you wash the underbody as you should it will hold moisture if it isn't heated straight away to burn off the moisture. you can buy sealer paint for the wrap but it's really just a way to rip some more money out of you in my opinion.
there is my 2 cents worth.:hurrican:
