are difficult to get too in 231's......

Several months ago, as I pulled my A1 into the garage to begin the T90 rebuild, I glanced at my oil pressure gauge. It read zero. Nothing, nada. It was working the last time I drove it however. The oil pressure always seemed low to me, usually around 12-20psi when hot and usually about 30-40 when cold. I don't know why I never really worried about it. I guess I just thought it was instrumentation. Probably in the last year as I had been driving it around town, when I would stop at a traffic light, glancing at the gauge, the needle was bouncing around the 5-10 psi. Engine temp was rock solid at 190 since I've owned it.

So, now, waiting for Sparky to show up, I decided to take a closer look at the oil pressure. Checked the easy things first, wires, connections, etc. Decided to take the oil pressure sending unit off and quickly became frustrated. That little sucker is awful hard to get an open ended wrench around. Oil filter, radiator hose and engine mount all seem to not want me taking that part off....

Is there a magic word, or a phrase, perhaps a spell or something that I can say to help me?

can't help w/ your problem, but on the 289 I put in the 6 I had to put a 90 outta the block then a 6" x 1/4" brass pipe to get it up outta the way and easier to get at.

Is your distributor fully seated all the way down? If it's even an 1/8" high the motor with run, but the oil pump won't be driven by the distributor shaft.

Well, I would think so. Since I had oil pressure one day and then not the next. I've never messed with the distributor since I've owned the Jeep. Can they work themselves out?

Put a test light on the sender terminal - turn on key and see if gauge goes up. Look at light (test) and it should give you a lit bulb indicating it getting power from your gauge.

My vote is the sending unit is bad.

Walt's method is what I would do, but I spent the day working on a T90 instead. :D
