how should my jeep run?

Lately, I have been trying once again to work on my engine, a 225 and 231 hybrid. It has a '76 Buick regal 231 block that has been completely rebuilt less than a year ago. Other then that, most of it is 225 parts. For sure, it has a 225 oil pump, timing cover, intake manifold, carb, and flywheel. It has an electronic ignition that has been completely gone through (ie... new plugs, new wires, new electronic ignition cap). I know for sure that I am having problems adjusting the automatic choke on the Rochester 2bbl carb. Other than that, I can't figure out why it runs so rough.

I know an odd fire runs rougher than most engines, but this one seems to run a bit too rough. The plugs fould out way too quickly, small amounts of plug smoke come out of the tail pipe, and it does not like to idle very well without being reved up. Overall, it seems to be getting too much fuel at the wrong time. I have rebuilt the carb once within the past six months and cleaned it back up within the past week.

Will the odd combination of parts cause it to run like this? What comes to mind as a potential problem? If it is carb related, does anyone have a spare lying around that I can try?

    Thanks,
    Jason

Check the timing - the marks for a 231 and 225 are off by 17* (I belive - memory is failing and my book is not handy). I have posted the reading before. I believe you should be using the timing for the 231 though you have a 225 cover (exactly oposite from me - I am running a 231/350 cover on a 225).

That reminds me, I checked the timing. It took a while to find the right location, but I can now turn the cap clockwise and counterclockwise and it just get worse in either direction. Before that, it was bumping into either the radiator hose or the power steering bracket before it would run the smoothest. As far as timing goes, I think it is as going to get as good as it is going to get. I did it all by ear since I don't have a light, so that might be a problem.

I'm with Warloch. Sounds like a timing or distibutor problem.

It sure sounds like from here that you have the dist in backwards.

Go back to square one and make sure its in right then you really need a timing light.

You also could have a plug wire sequence problem.

You say it wont go far enough to sound right that would be the reasons why.

Backwards? As in 180* out? I don't agree. If that's the case it'll run perfectly smooth, just be a real dog. Passenger side exhaust will be cold if you have dual pipes. Oh, and it'll time perfectly as well. DAMHIK.

I'd agree that it sounds like a timing issue. Go back set it to TDC, make sure the distributor is where it should be, check plug wire order.

Get the timing light, make sure timing is good.

What's the manifold vacuum telling you?

Should be steady ~20 at idle. That can diagnose a lot of problems with the way it's running.

What about he timing gear set and the alignment of the set, are you sure the timing set is in right.
