Reverse idler gear

    How critical is it to get the reverse idler gear out of the case before you soak the entire thing in solvent? I messed with it for a little and decided that the effort might not be worth the reward. Anyone just leave it in while you cleaned the case?

    It depends on the solvent. I have left both it and the lower gear set in place and soaked them clean without issues. It was a standard petro based solvent - don't know the name - just what dad would get from the mine.

    Kerosene works well as a cleaner.
