Alright I have my CJ stripped and gutted on the inside and working on the out. Did a bunch of body work and got the front fenders off last weekend. Now I have a clear shot at the steering box that the steering shaft/wheel mount to under the driver side floor pan. I have loosened the clamp at the bottom of the outer shaft it just spins around now. Do I have to pull the steering wheel to get this out of the way or what? Gonna be a pain to pull the tub off if I have to lift over the steering wheel. Any and all input would be great. I will get some pics up on my car domain site to help show what I am talking about.

Pull the steering wheel and unbolt the steering box from the frame. The whole shebang should drop out from under the Jeep.

This has been discussed ad nauseum here, so try a search. There is also some good info over on the CJ-3B board in the Tech section.

So unbolt the steering box from the frame and it will come out then huh? I will have to give that a shot. Thanks for the input. Does the steering wheel still need to come off or will it be able to come out going upward thru the floor?
    Thanks again.

You really only have two choices Eric: Pull the steering wheel off the tube and drop the box/tube assembly out through the bottom, or else unbolt the three bolts on the top of the box and unscrew the worm gear/tube up out of the box and leave the box bolted to the frame. Of course if you remove the tube, all the bearings are going to have to remove the box to reassemble it anyway since all of the ball bearings will end up down in the bottom of the box. (They are separate balls, not in a cage.)

My vote is to remove the wheel and drop the assembly out through the bottom.

I may be wrong here but I did not thing a V6 could drop the shaft out the bottom because of the exhaust. I may have been doing this the hardway.

Thanks for all the input, didn't know about the bearings inside the gear box. I have a buddy coming over tomorrow to assist with this project and will be taking a closer look at it with his input also.

I have Ross steering on mine and took out the three bolts (note where shims went) and took whole shebang out top with wheel attached. Took me about 20 mins.

Got it out!!!! Took some time clearing away the grease and grime to see what we had to do, but removed the 3 bolts thru the frame, pulled the remaining body bolts out then removed the intermediate shaft from the gear box, my buddy held the tub up while I twisted and worked it out thru the top. Thanks for all the input.
