Seems like this subject has been up before but I couldn't find it.

Lately I have found that if I need to back up an incline the jeep bucks bad. I usually have to slip the clutch alot just to get it done.
I have looked at motor mounts, tranny/xfer case mounts, and the rear main seal is not leaking.

Has anyone had similar problems? What did you find to be the problem?:?

I recall there was an old thread about the V6 restraint cable and bucking in reverse. No personal experience with it though.

Any idea how or where the restraint cable went or worked. Guessing that would be a band-aid fix? The jeep was doing fine....now it isn't. Could a bad tranny mount cause it. I visually looked at it and didn't see anything wrong. I am wondering if I should jack up the tranny and see if it separates. I am just not sure what would cause it. Seems like something is loose. :?:?:?

Do you have a powerlock in the rear? I'm just wondering if one could slip and cause that? I'm sure a bad mount would too. Also I'm wondering if you mean the clutch is chattering which would make it kind of buck.

Thanks Billy. That is exactly what I am seeing. Works fine in all forward gears. It could be clutch chatter.........but I put in a new clutch and pressure plate when I did my engine swap 1 1/2 years ago (jeep sat for a year.....wondering....). I guess I will look at the tranny mount first. If thats not it then.......clutch. Thanks for the input. I will post what I find. If anyone else has any thoughts please share.

No, i am running a T18, mabye slightly different. I tried having someone watch the engine and do the loaded torque visual, and i tried jacking up the trans case with a floor jack and didn't see much movement. i was thinking of replacing the rubber trans bushings with poly maybe. would be interested to see how mudweisers came out.

    thanks

I would bet you are still dealing with the same physics that cause the T-14 to be un drivable in reverse without the cable attached. If it only does it in reverse, look to install a stay cable just like the Jeep had stock before throwing other parts at it.

Discussed here before, not long ago. Without the fore-and-aft tension cable from bell housing to frame crossmember, a dynamic feedback-loop develops in the clutch linkage when reversing.

Search "clutch chatter" and/or "stay cable."
