I was wondering if anyone know if there is anything to watch out for when disconecting a dana 18 transfer case from a sm420 tranny. i think there is an adapter plater seperating the two. i have read that you could lose a bearing in the tranny. thanks you guys always seem to have all the answers.:v6:

If i remember right.. if you remove the adapter off the sm420 transmission.. the rear most bearing is able to slip out of place. Its a big bearing.. so it'll be easy to spot and make sure it does not move.

if you remove the adapter off of the tranny the main shaft can move rearward causing the roller bearings at the front of the shaft to fall out of place and into the bottom of the case. I have an sm420 right now that the PO had let the mainshaft move back and the above has happened. If you leave the adapter in place there should be no issue.

Yep. If you just take the t-case off the adapter and leave the adapter on the tranny you won't have to worry about it.

One more? does the transmision and the transfer case with the adapter share gear oil or does the adapter seperate the two.

I don't think they share. It may depend on the type of adapter you have. Mine is from Novak and does not share.

when you drained the oil, was there any brass in it?

if there was, they share oil. if no then they don't.

Re: #9 no brass in tc oil = do not share. Brass in SM 420 oil is expected from normal wear of 2-3 and 3-4 syncro's.
