    I have a 1965 Cj5 with a 198 engine (B1349430). The Tranmission is has 780148 cast on it.
The engine needs replaced or rebuilt.

    I'm having trouble finding a rebuilt 198.

Is there a different engine, like the 225, 231,258 that could easily replace the 198? If so, where can I find parts? I will need everything that can't be used from the existing 198. Things like manifolds, starter, brackets, etc.

I'm looking for advice from someone who know all the issues of a conversion, or advice that says stick with the 198.

The Bell housing to engine flange patern on the 198 is different than the 225/231. But the Bolt pattern on the back of the bell for the tranny is usually the same as a GM from 1965 and up. The physical shape of the 198 make putting a 225/231 eazy to mount in the same place with no driveline or radiator or motor mount changes-- or only very slight changes. All the manifolds are different-- so you cannot use the 198 manifolds on the 225/231. Some small parts will enterchange however-- like pullys, outer waterpump, maybe the valve covers(?)

A good source for engine swap info is Novak Conversions:

The above link deals specifically with the odd fire 225, but has a little blurb on the 198. Their Knowledge Base can be very helpful in deciding what you want to do.

There's a bit of information in the tech section here as well on the 198 that would be useful to look at I'd think...
