The questions keep popping up so progress continues. I am not sure if a gasket is necessary between the transmission and the bellhousing (original T90 and F134). The FSM doesn't show one, but the Parts List for the CJ-3B does. The parts list shows a gasket, bearing retainer that covers the entire mating surface. My disassembly pics don't show one either. The tranny has been rebuilt (Herm). I'm guessing not, but with my half century mark approaching next week, I've learned that guessing can be dangerous. R) If no gasket, any sealer? I did see in a T90 rebuild guide that Vern was considering adding sealer to the countershaft prior to installing the bellhousing. Good / bad? Thanks as always.

Thanks to you both. I couldn't find one at the normal part sites on line, but the Willy's Parts List threw me.

What did you finally do? Did you use a gasket or sealent? Or did you just leave it as is? I am at that same spot right now. I pulled my trans case, tranny and bell housing. All I wanted to do was fix the leaks. I have a "57 CJ5. It runs great but leaves puddles. I want to assemble everything together and then raise it all at one time. Did you do this too? What would be the easiest way to do it? Anything you can add I would appreciate it. Thanks. -G

I ended up putting them together, metal to metal. I set the motor on a crib of 4 x 4's, stacked three high. I mounted the clutch to the flywheel and the bellhousing to the transmission. I hung the transmission and tranfer case from my engine hoist and mated the transmission main drive gear shaft to the pilot bushing with the clutch removed. Clutch was removed due to lack of success on first attempt to engage the pilot bushing. Once I had the right angle and height on the transmission/transfer case I didn't adjust the hoist again. I reinstalled the clutch and the transmission shaft went right in.

I then picked up the engine, transmission and transfer case as one unit and set it on the chassis. Installed motor mounts and transfer case/ transmission mounts and torqued them all down. All good until I realized the next day that I had forgotten to install the clutch control tube. Once I get a new one, I plan to drop the transmission end using the engine hoist and use a ratchet strap to pull it to the right until I can install the clutch control tube. I'm open to suggestion on an easier way. Good luck.

While a gasket isn't required, my kit has one in it. I'm creeping up on the big 5-0 in a coupla years also, I can't remember where i bought the kit.

I can offer the theory though, that the reason for the gasket is to keep the lower shaft in the T-90 from oozing tranny oil out through the front of the case. With a gasket sealing the tranny-to-bellhousing surface, that shaft could ooze all day and not a drop would end up on the driveway.

That's my theory and I'm sticking to it.. :D

On clutch tube, I lowered complete unit, t-case, trans - eng with floor jack under cross member and un-screwed ball from t-case and pushed it against spring in tube and screwed ball back into case. Worked good for me. Had no fluid in er at time tho.

    Walt,
Thanks for the info. I assume you were able to get enough flex out of the two motor mounts to drop the transmission low enough? I have no fluids in the various components yet, so I like what you're telling me. :)

Depending on how the ball mount is on the frame rail I have been able to tweek the tcase over and slip the tube on while sliding the mount up the frame. Be sure to loosen motor mounts and then realign.

Na - never done that
