Low mileage SM420

Picked this up this morning at the freight terminal, a NOS SM420. Still in the box. Zero miles. Popped the lid off after uncrating. Put the lid back on and it shifts like a dream.
Took some pics. In my personal album. Now I will go take a nap because I didnt sleep last night

Nice score. Gettin around okay on yhe one leg you have left?

 

Dont miss the leg so much as I miss my arm. You can drive a jeep with one leg if you dont have to stop really fast (but hey, early Jeeps dont stop very fast with two legs and 4 wheel disc brakes), but with an old Ross box, its kinda hard to shift, steer, wave and smile at the same time.
The tranny was apparently, a one time score. The seller had no idea what it was from, nor what it would fit.
I literally stumbled across it on the internet.
After dozens of email pics, I bought it. One initial problem was, the top cover was for a remote shifter. In other words, there was no 3 ft stick/cane shifter we are used to.
Fortunately, I had a spare tranny and cover, thanks to an old Jeep that was once used for target practice by the US Navy. The Jeep is called "Neverhit", for obvious reasons.
But everything else fit visually, even that wierd slotted nut on the outside of the case that holds the reverse lever on.
Tomorrow I will pull off the Ujoint flange and make sure it isnt one of the oddball 32 spline shafts.
Lesson learned: when you are overhauling your Tcase or Tranny, after it is clean, paint the inside of the case with an thinned oil based primer and epoxy in a magnet to the bottom of the case.
Even if its an old magnet from an old hard drive. (They are very strong.)
Small downside (at this point) is the PTO cover hasnt been cleared and drilled and tapped. I have a PTO winch but it drives off the T case of course, so that is no big deal. Another area that wont leak oil.
Otherwise, its clear sailing at this point. In spite of my joy, in the next month or so, I will be parting out the other 420, so if you need any parts, I have a handfull of NOS parts as well as the ones from the old tranny which if you need them, give me a spline, gear tooth and diameter count.

 

Hey Maxx, My online name is 'neverhit2002' for the same reason. I got my jeep from my father in law who got it from his father in law, who got it from someone who pulled it off of a bombing range in the California desert.

 

I picked up the same kind of tranny. Brand new still packed in Military Box. Remote shifter top. Call Capitol Jeepers in Sacramento California. They sell them and send a standard shift top for them. I have had mine in my CJ for over a year and it still works like brand new.

I found the topic when I did a search for 'Hard Tops' evidently the word "top" brings it up on search.

By the way, that remote shift 420 was uswd in the Military Gama Goat. These trannys were still being manufactured for "Con Diesel" who was building the Goat for the government well into the 70s, while Chevy quit using them after 67. The difference is the closed PTO hole ( not machined out.)
