If the alternator never had a chance to do anything it couldn't have been the problem. I don't know what to say other than recheck everything you've done, make sure a screw isn't shorting something out maybe. It's got to be something simple.

Ah, that makes a big difference right there. Thanks.

At least it's my understanding they are supposed to have an internal resistor. I won't even pretend I'm knowledgeable about the specifics of certain things.

Interesting side discussion re: resistor. FWIW, my F head has an external resistor block mounted to the firewall. (Some one converted the 24v sys to 12v, obviously)
I'm only going from memory here based on points ignition vehicles I had many years ago but, my understanding is that THE ignition system HAS a resistor but it may be a ballast/block type, a wire OR, a coil w/ a resistor built in. Coils I have had are sold and marked as having an internal resistor or not :coffee:

Just off the phone with Pertronix technical support.

He says there is an internal resistor in the Pertronix flamethrower coil I am using, and if their are no bare wires anywhere, he says it just must be a defective part. They are designed for 12 Volt systems and can take up to 16 volts. We are using the correct coil with resistance and hooked up correctly so I guess I will try it again. If the second one fails then I will have confirmation that the Jeep is a possessed evil vehicle and will need cut up into tiny little bits with a torch.

    STEP Away From The Jeep!!
Stay calm, you will be successful. I too have had problems with Pertronix systems. It sounds like you have hooked it up correctly. Put the new one in and make sure of the voltage and give it another try. If you burn up one more you can always just put points in to get it running. They will also take back multiple failed units.
    Good luck.
