I just bought a 69 cj5 and don't really know much about it. From browsing around through the technical info here I've found out quite a lot though. I read that it came with a dana 18, but all the pics it showed of them was a twin stick. Mine just has one stick, is it possible someone put a D20 in as a replacement at some point and time. Also Is there a stop on the steering. I can only turn about 1/2 as far to the left as I can to the right. Someone told me that the pitman arm was off, but i thought there were splines to keep the teeth from getting off. I'm by no means a mechanic, I basically got this jeep to learn off of. If any of you guys could help out with my problems (which seem to be growing by the day) I would greatly appreciate it.

    Thanks
    Jessee

First off, welcome from Southern Illinois. There were single stick versions of the D 18 also. Your 69' would have had that option from the factory. As for your other question, there are screw in steering stops on the axle but I don't think it would cause half the steering to one side compared to the other. The person was probably thinking your pitman arm had been taken off and put back on incorrectly (wrong spline) It is hard to tell without seeing it.

One more quick question, I need to get a sticker and don't have an ebrake. I was told by someone that used to have a 65 that his brake didn't go back to the drums, but to a flywheel on the back side of his Tcase. when i got under the jeep and looked I saw what looked like a pulley on the back side of the tcase...is that the "flywheel". I planned on upgrading to 11" drums so this may not even be an issue right now, more of a curious thing.

There was a drum setup on the back of the t-case. It did not go to the brakes. You may or may not have all the parts there. If you fill out the rest of your profile someone may live right around the corner from you and just come look. Good luck.

It's not a flywheel, but a drum brake. That's the right configuration. If you take it apart, clean it up and connect it with a cable, it will probably work well enough to get your sticker. They aren't very effective though, and your transfer case will leak (it's a Jeep thing). Once it's soaked in oil, it's useless.

You need a factory manual. They are cheap, about $35. Available through Turners http://thejeep.com/shop/HOT+SELLERS....html?osCsid=5ceaaafd5b9b346c892cf0e9325e20ed
and a lot of other sources.

Thanks for all the help so far guys. Soon enough I'll get the digital camera out and have some pics and probably several more questions.

I figured out the problem with my steering. I work the hootowl shift at a local factory here from 6-6am and then have to get my daughter up and ready for school so i usually don't get back home till 8:30 or so and I'm pretty much ready for bed. Then I gotta be up at 3:30 when she gets home. So I've not had a lot of time to work on it, but I tinkered on it a little while yesterday and realized a need to adjust the steering stabalizer. The shock isn't allowing enough travel i think. So maybe tomorrow morning I'll be able to update again.:D

Welcome from Central Florida! I know what you mean when you say your problems seem to be growing by the day. Everytime I get a part in, and start to install it, I find something down the line that needs fixing before I can finish the job properly. I finally got all the bearings, seals and what-nots in for the front axle, and I found that the king pin bearings are shot, but its all worth it in the end. Enjoy your jeep!

Herm of www.hermtheoverdriveguy.com can supply the whole thing, and will probably also tell you how to set it up properly.
