So I searched the forums, I searched the web, I read the instructions that came with my rebuilt original AMC 304 V8. I just want to make sure I'm not missing anything before I turn the key for the first time on my 79 CJ5. This is what I gather:

    1. Fill all fluids (oil, radiator, tranny, diffs, etc.)
    2. Double and triple check all bolts, gaskets, hoses, etc.
    3. Use conventional 30 weight oil, not synthetic
    4. Fill oil filter with oil and prime the oil pump
    5. Fill carb with 1/4 cup gasoline (and tank with enough fuel)
    6. Pump gas pedal to ensure it's spraying gas
    7. Install air cleaner
    8. Have a tach, oil pressure gauge, temp. gauge and fire extinguisher working and ready, and put an industrial fan blowing in front of the radiator for extra cooling
    9. Start the engine and hold it at about 2000 RPM for 15-20 minutes (unless there are major problems)
    10. Shut the engine off, drain the oil, use a magnet to collect metal shavings, change oil and filter
    11. Drive around at differing rpms, never getting too close to redline and trying not to idle too much, check for any leaks, loose bolts, etc.
    12. Drive this way for 100 miles and change oil and filter again
    13. Tighten exhaust manifold bolts again
    14. Drive around gently for another 400-500 miles, trying to vary rpm and never over-revving
    15. Do your final oil change, and check all gaskets, bolts, etc.

Is this everything in a nutshell? The rebuilder shop that did all the work is extremely reputable and I trust that all the major torque specs and measurements on the engine components are right on. It's my first experience with this and I just don't want any major disasters after all this work and money. Any tips or advice or even stories of your first start up on a rebuilt engine would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

sounds like you've got it down. Just remember, it's probably gonna smoke and stink like crazy on first start. First time I did it scared the h#@@ outa me. Thought I screwed up some how. See if you can find out what head gaskets they used, some have to be retorqued after break in. Good luck

refererence #4: I would prime the pump with a drill and shaft; remove valve covers and make sure oil is getting there.
#8: if you need that big a fan, something is obviously wrong.
#10 and #12 are excessive in my opinion (this isn't brain surgery)
seems your changing the oil 3 times in 500 miles; excessive in my opinion
disregard all of the above if your warranty reuires you to do all this
