On a 1975 CJ5 with a Dana 44 do you need to greese the axles before sliding them back into the differential or do you just pack the bearing?

    just pack the bearing.
Make sure the oil seal that the axle shaft passes through is in good shape or it may leak diff fluid out the end of the tube. This seal is just inside the bearing in the axle housing on each end. You can get these at almost any autoparts store for cheap.

I think some 44 bearings are intended to be greased, and they'll have a seal inboard of the bearing. Other 44 are intended to get lubed from the differential gear lube, and they'll not have a seal. I don't know how to tell the difference. I think the bearings are different depending on type, and maybe the outer seal is different too? Or am I making up stuff again?

I don't think the bearings are different. Just the lubrication method. The only way I know of for certain to check wether there is a inner seal or not is to just pull the axle shaft.
