I have always wanted to go to a 2bbl carb for my 73 and now I have the opportunity. I was able to pick up a previously running 258 donor engine out of a 81 scrambler. (only $150 :beer:) Has all the upgrades I have been wanting to do for quite a while. HEI, new alternator etc. However, I don't feel like swapping the engine. The engine originally had a MC2100 on it, but it was given away to a friend before I purchased the engine. I was given a Holley carb with the engine. As best I can tell, it is a 2bbl. Model 2300. Has anyone ever used one of these? Anybody familiar with it? Suggestions?

I would love to pick up a MC2100, however, it appears none of the junkyards I called had any vehicles with carbs. So much for the junkyards in chi-town.

I have a 73 with the 304 V8 and it has the 2100 carb on it. That was stock with my vehicle.

You'll need to visit the pick-your-part yards, or look for yards that specialize in older vehicles. Many dismantlers won't deal with anything older than a decade or so.

You could also get a 2100 or 2150 from a guy on eBay that specializes in this conversion.

The 2300 Holley is a good carburetor, but you may have a lot of trouble setting it up for off-road use. Using a 2100 Motorcraft will result in fewer headaches IME.

If you really are set on a Holley I have a 2Bbl I just took off my CJ5.. I installed a 2100.. I'll sell ya the Holley cheap.. Do a google seaarch on Motorcraft 2100 and you should be able to find one, rebuilt or used.. I found a rebuilt on Ebay from a guy going by Carbontooters. He rebuilds em and sells em on Ebay. I saw sveral used 2100's for sale at a couple of carb shops web sites.. But those needed rebuilt. I'd also contact Pony Carb in Las Cruces NM. They will rebuild your 2100 or may have one for sale..
Ther's one for sale on Ebay right now.... This ones listed for the 6 cylinder but should work on the 304 as well.. You need a 1.21 venturi for the 304.

All of these things are true, however I didn't feel like spending another $200-300 for the carb at this time. "Grandpa" won't be seeing any off road trails for a while, so hopefully this carb will work until I come across on a 2100.

I read that in an article. Some one said it had to do with the jets not being covered by fuel at all times. The article stated that you could purchase jet extensions to remedy the problem.

I don't think that's enough. Got a link? You also need to raise the bowl vents, install a vent whistle and/or slosh baffle, use a spring-loaded needle and seat, and convert to side-pivot float bowl if you have a center pivot float. Probably $100 in parts to get started.

There's a lot of info out there about making the 2300/4160 Holley run off-road. The main problem I had was they just wouldn't run at certain uphill or downhill slopes.

Holley has a product, the Truck Avenger carburetor, that's targeted at the off-road market. The 2300 is mostly for flat-track and drag class racing. Holley also makes a 2300 marine carb, that's modified for boats - it might be more suitable for a Jeep.
