I'm thinking about designing my rear bumper /swinging tire carrier to also hold the tow bar is this worth designing or am I just being pessimistic ?

Are you talking about building in a tow hitch to pull trailers? Or a place to stow the tow bar after you tow the Jeep to where you're going?

Either way, I don't see why it couldn't be done. As long as the bumper is thick enough and mounted really solid, either a bolt-on hitch or a welded-in receiver should work, IMO.

Has been done. Here's jpflat2a's setup. I'm sure he'll chime in and tell you about it.

FWIW I had this setup for a while on my CJ5. For me it was a neat idea as a way to get you off the trail in case of a breakdown. As a way to stow / carry the tow bar I was regularly using to tow the Jeep with....it was a pain in the you know what.

Hooking up the Jeep went from a 1-man 15 minute job to a 2-man 30 minute job. Wrestling that tow bar around with a 32" MT on a steel wheel wasn't fun.

How did it not rotate down? That's actually clever.

Somehow fab a quick detach for the tire using 2 pins?
