Dana 25 gears

    O.K. So today I jack up my front end, lock a hub and spin the tire one revolution. the drive shaft turns 5 1/3 times. I'm assuming I have 5.38 gears? If this is the case I would like to change them. 4.27 would be nice. Anyone know if I only need to change the ring and pinion, or is there something else needed? I have a dana 44 in the rear and I'm assuming (hoping) the gears are the same. Same question for the back. Maybe a disc brake upgrade is in line? Thanks. :) :beer: :v6:

    most likely, you do have 5.38s
    a quick pull of the diff covers would confirm that
    you would only need to change the ring and pinion for both axles
    the current carriers will work

    If you don't have tags, look at the numbers stamped into the ring gear.

    A Warn/Saturn overdrive would be better than a gear change IMO, if there's nothing wrong with the axles. Unless you can do the gears yourself, the OD will be cheaper.

    I'm thinking that may be the way to go. Sounds like the 4.27 gears are hard to find, and doing the job myself may not be an option. Thanks for the feedback.

    i'm sure there are plenty of matching dana 25 (or 27)/44 pairs around with 4.27 gears in them. swapping out an entire axle is easier and cheaper then regearing your current axles.

    in fact, i have a pair of axles for sale right now, but i'm on the other side of the country.

    but going with an OD is probably the best option if you plan to use the jeep offroad much because the 5.38's are a nice low crawling gear and you may want to keep them.
