First thoughts are throw out bearing, tranny input bearing or dry u-joints.

It's a T-18 ... you mean the real 1st, the granny gear? That's a straight-cut gear and it will whine compared to the other gears. A truck 4-speed is really noisy compared to a passenger car manual transmission, in all gears. How does it compare to reverse?

I have the factory jeep t-18 in my 73 and in low,or 1st, which ever you would like to call it, sounds terrible! I believe they all make this noise in first. Also no syncromesh on this gear either, meaning you pretty much need to be stopped to get it into gear. You are probably OK. Good luck

I have a Ford T18 and it whines in first and reverse. All I've ever been around are that way.
