...they will a good portion of the time and if you want electronic ignition you use pertronics or something like that. I've not done a flatty yet but on a cj series depends a bit on how you position the engine....

I put a 67 283 in my 52M38 back in the 70's. As I recall I cut 1 1/4" off the trans x member and added to drive side. Gave me clearence with bell housing. Had to bang in the firewall slightly to give clearance for the distributor. Cut the front x member out under the radiator and welded in flat stock which served as a seat for the new larger radiator. Still have the same jeep after all these years and am doing a frame up as I am now retired. In addition to above I have now added dual master cylinder, disc brakes, Ford reverse steering, electronic ignition, rear gas tank, rebuilding engine. At the rate I am going, it will probably another year or two before complete. At this point the frame, disc brakes, master cylinder and steering box are done. Engine is out for rebuild.

There's some discussion on the Novak site, if you haven't seen that yet:

    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/chevy_standard_shift_info.htm

    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/cj3b_swap.htm
    http://www.novak-adapt.com/knowledge/cj5_55-71_swap.htm

Quite a lot of duplication in the last articles, but worth looking at.

There were a lot of them done before V6s were cheap and widely available... Should be well within your capability.

Also some more pics to show clearance. Also, we swapped the motor from my jeep to my K10, so these pictures are of a chevy 305. Dont mind the dirty engine bay (we're redoing the jeep now)

One more question for those of you with a SBC, are you running the short style water pump or the long style. I know its only an inch or so difference but every inch counts on these flattys, right? Just trying to decide if its worth me swapping over to the short style as it means new brackets for the alternator and PS pump as well.

It's a really tight fit in a Flatty and a ECJ5. You should really have the short water pump. It's getting hard to find brackets for the short water pump. Try looking for V-8's in Vans.

I really should get pictures of my Brothers V-8 in his 55' M38a1. If I ever get over to his house in Tacoma Washington.

I had a CJ2A with a 327 in it. It had the short water pump and an HEI. The PO had to cut the firewall to put the HEI in, it looked like a points dist. would fit alright without surgery. It had ramhorn (center dump) cast iron manifolds that fit well with the Ross box.

I'm currently reworking Shaggy to clean up the Chebby283 installation that was already in it. I'm replacing the firewall/cowl section as the PO had really butchered the old one to clear the dizzy (points type). I agree, space is at a premium. I moved the engine forward and 1/8" left of center, which was dictated by how far left I could move the D18 transfer case. I made my own mounts (copied Novak's). I'm using a pre 67 short water pump and modified it by moving the pulley flange back 3/8". This lets me use a 1968, 7" Ford pulley, which is shallower than the stock one, so I can cut 3/8" off the pump shaft. I'm eliminating the fan and going to an electric pusher fan, mounted between the grille and radiator (a 60 Ford cross flow). I've had some issues with my ISP so I'm sorry about the late response to this question. I'll try to round up some pics for you, if you want. Or, PM me if you have other questions

Personally I would stick with the 225 unless you don't have the motor. Honesty I really do not like the 305 SBC, somewhat of a lame motor. With the added weight, not too stellar stock performance, extreme modification, steering issues, cooling issues, and did I mention a lame motor, you'd be much better off with the lighter, more torque, more space yada yada yada that the 225. If it was a 350 I could see the justification, but a 305. I just feel for all the work involved with swapping in a V-8, a better motor could be found, but it was free:)not much better than that right.
