friend of mine is selling his CJ5

has a few minor things wrong with it....but nothing thats a huge deal. it has a glass tub, good title, t18, and lots of doo-dads.

i was thinking of getting it for the drive train for my CJ6

    so my question is....

how hard is it to sell off other jeep parts from a parts vehicle? is it a hard sell, or is it smooth sailing.

i'll have a rolling chassis+title , soft top, glass tub, tilt column, full cage, dash and newer wiring to unload.....

i just dont want to buy it and have to fight to get rid of the stuff.....

share your thoughts please :) i've never done the "parts vehicle" thing before

I don't think it would be hard to unload parts with this group especially. I'm already wondering how much for the cage, tilt column, and wiring.

I would not mind seeing pictures at some point:)

You might consider buying the 3rd Jeep, taking what you want, and eBaying the remains as a parts vehicle. Selling it off piecemeal could take a long time... seems like there are always buyers, but they are (almost) always too far away.

I bought a 75 parts jeep for my 74. Having the exact same jeep around for parts is amazing. Put my fan through the radiator on a trail and mangled both. Took me an hour to be back out wheeling once I got home. Snapped my tail pipe off the muffler. Was amazed when I found the parts jeep had a mint muffler on it. Sold my friend a driveshaft, replaced my hubs, etc, etc. Can't wait till I need a new spindle or hub for a D30. Just take a walk down back to the parts jeep. If the parts jeep has any of the same components (axles, steering, engine) I would highly reccomend keeping it around.

Ebay it - you'll reach more people. Selling part by part will bring you more $$ then selling as a parts jeep but will take time and energy. It's amazing what some parts are going for on EBAY. Maybe its just the parts I need. :)

    thanks for the replies guys.

any ideas what the main parts would go for

    its a 77 cj5, rebuilt pretty stout.

for glass body, rolling frame + title, complete dash, soft top, tilt column

    i was thinking

    300, 250, 100, 150, 50 respectively -ish.........more? or less?

not sure if i'd sell the full cage...i might use it as a starting point for the 6's cage....but thats pretty far ahead right now.

i really just want to kinda sort "break even"...cuz he wants 2000 for it....i figure the drive train is about $450 worth of stuff...maybe $500 *shrug*. the parts are all good, engine is strong. and a winch, ramsey 8500...about $300

so that leaves me to recoup about $1200...which could be a challenge.

thoughts? or just help me rationalize it :)

yea i thought about that too......

it really is a nice looking jeep....i'd feel terrible taking it apart.

i could see myself changing my mind and just getting it to good working shape.

if i do get it, i think i'd have to make a conscious effort to take it apart, otherwise i wouldnt.

    i need a bigger garage....

$2000 for a parts Jeep seems steep to me. If you're just looking for a drivetrain, does it have to be from a Jeep?

well its not a "parts jeep" in the usual sense.....its actually a very good jeep....looks good, runs good....just needs some little stuff (clutch slave cyliner and a small crack in the glass tub) and it would be a very nice jeep.

i re-counted what all i need for my CJ6 ......heres what i figure I would be taking, and what i think their fair value would be

    t-case and trans - $175-200
solid engine complete with york for OBA- $400-500
good 33" mud tires on decent wheels - $300
good ramsey winch (with some spare parts and motor) -$300

so that leave about $700 to $975 to recoup from the rest of the jeep.

so its not a "parts jeep" in the junk vehicle sense....it actually is nice....i just want to cannibalize it for my cj6 :)

So this is a T-18 and Dana 20? You can maybe do that from parts for $400, more likely it would end up around $700. Which engine? A 360 is likely worth $300-400 for a good one, maybe a little more. A 304 should be about the same, but might cost more because there are fewer of them out there. I'd say half-new for the winch ... $300 sounds low.

The only way you'll get back your money though is to part it out completely, IMO. I'd guess you could get a few hundred for what's left over as a package. You could maybe get more if you put your wheels and tires on it.

all right just to make you feel better about the deal.....
2 weeks ago I purchased a 53 m38a1 for the same purpose your proposing here, swap from the m38a1...289 w/4speed-d18, d44 rear w/13" drums, d30 front w/disc, saginaw ps w/gm tilt coloumn, firewall mounted pb, 33" wheels-tires, 2" lift, rear mounted tank, some other goodies....all going into my 66cj6.
The running gear from the 6 will go into the m38 (already got a buddy drooling over the 52, wants it bad)
I paid $3000 for the m38 plus 3-4 hundred more to tow home/hotels/gas etc
Lots of work ahead ,but I'll get the running gear I want for the 6, then sell the m38 to recoup the purchase
    That's what I told my wife...and that's my story and I'm sticking to itR)R)R)

i'm not sure i'm reading what you wrote right.....

are you saying if i wanted to put a t-18 and d20 combo it would normally cost me 400-ish ? ? ? possibley 700? that seems high to me...its a ford t-18, not a jeep if that makes a difference.

OK....now, to elaborate what i was saying....

i want to do the following.

    1)buy the vehicle....
2)subtract the value of the parts im keeping (trans engine etc)
3)sell the remaining parts for the remainder of the value.

i'm not looking to sell the leftover parts to cover the WHOLE cost of the vehicle..... just enough to cover whats left that i dont use. does that make sense?....i'm not sure if i was clear about that in my previous ramblings :)

thats where i figure i'll only have 900 ish to recoup after i take what i want for my '6.

also not counting any parts from my 6 i can maybe sell off for a few bucks here and there. (engine cores, 3 spd trans...it also has a d20, so i'll have a spare)

oh yea.....the engine is a 304...which is the same as my 6.....except it hasn't run in forever....the newer engine is good and strong

Oh yeah ... let's lay out the possibilities.

You have the Dana 20, so one way to do this is with a T-150/T-176 bell ($50-100), a Ford T-18 ($100-250) and an adapter kit ($500) http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/kit_188.htm = $650-850
Or, you find a Jeep truck T-18 ($150-300) and use the Ford input shaft ($200) and the same bell ($50-100) = $400-600.
    Or, you put a Ford T-18 ($100-250) and a Jeep/IH T-18 ($150-300) together into a single transmission, using the same bell ($50-100) = $300-650.

That doesn't include small stuff like the clutch parts, trans mount, floor pans etc.

I expect the absolute cheapest would be to scrounge for a Ford T-18, and find a IH T-18 or T-19, and build a single trans from the two. You could probably do this for a couple hundred if you knew what you were doing and you spent a long time finding the cheapest parts. Of course, any new internal parts would be in addition to that.

I think a budget of $1000 is reasonable for a T-18 swap, unless you are really willing to scrape and scrounge.

oh yea...i forgot about the trans to tcase adapter......those are pretty pricey.

so really that makes this even a more attractive deal ;) since the t-18 or np435 were the trans i wanted anyway......

uh oh.....i'm starting to feel talked into it!!!! ..... PANIC!
