I'm still in the process of reading through all the info on the steering swap. Any idea if the steering box from a 1982 Chevy Scottsdale will work on a 1962 CJ5 with a Dana 30 open knuckle front axle ? I haven't found enough specifics yet. I am asking because I have the truck sitting in my yard waiting to be scrapped.

    Thanks

As I recall the steering box mounts to the wrong side of the frame on the full size trucks.

My 1992 full size Chevy has the box mounted on the inside of the frame. That is what you want. If yours mounts inside theframe it should work. I think the much older ones had the box outside the frame. The one on the right is from an 82. It is good to go. For reference the one on the left is from a 65.

If your doing the power swap look for something from a 70's model full size or mid size car. All the truck boxes are mounted on the wrong side. Mine came out of a 74 Camaro with power steering. One other thing make sure it's the 4 hole mount and not the 3 hole mount on the box. the one listed above is a 3 hole not strong enough.

Guys, please be careful when using generalities like this unless you have direct, first-hand experience with one of those "weak" steering boxes failing. We've heard this over and over again about "weak" Dana 25/27 axles, "junk" Ross steering setups, and the dreaded "junk" flanged Dana 41/44s. In almost every case it comes down to third or fourth-hand experiences or just plain hearsay, and repeated "wisdom" rather than fact.

    trickpatrick Done? LOL

Its easy to fall in that trap.

It's key... to make up your mind what you are building your rig for before spending big money..

Trail running, rock crawling, trailer queen, ect.

A 3 hole box should be fine for trailrunning for instance.
But not a good choice for rocks and 39's:rofl:

Over building can cause a lack of funds and lack of the desire need'd to finish project.

I have been converted to the get it running first then make improvment group this year.
