So I drove about 20 miles today to take a friend to buy a new car. On the way back (about 3 miles) I stopped to get gas, while I was filling up I decided to check my oil level, it seemed a bit low so I bought 2qts. of valvoline 10w-30 I think it was the stuff with the engine cleaner in it. Black Bottle with a picture of what looked like a metal filter on it. Well, when I started Sheila (may baby's
name:) ) I heard a really loud clicking sound, like something was hitting. At first I though it was my Exhaust because it only does when I am above idle speeds, but when I opened her up it sounded like it was coming from my Carb Intake nd exhaust manifold area. It was so bad I had to leave it at a Wal-Mart parking lot, I am going up tomorrow to get a full oil change. I hope this fixes it I was planning of using all the money I am getting soon to re-do my suspension and exhaust. Any help and confermation I am over reacting would be nice, but be honest. I am just tired of buying vehicels that I am told were good and end up going tits up a couple months later.

Take it to a real shop not just an oil change place.

They will be more able to diagnose it.

A quick lube will mess it up, had it happen before... Mixing oils is a bad thing, from what I've told and experience. Could it be 2 different oils fighting eachother?

As far as I'm aware, oils mix fine. Different brands, weight, syn/blended/dino, they all mix fine. This has nothing to do whith what kind of oil you are using. I wouldn't attempt to drive it until you can get someone with more experience to listen to it. I'm an old man who has spent untold dollars on crummy vechicles over the years, Rule #1 is when you hear a new "really REALLY" bad sound, you do NOT "open her up". Ignoring this rule will cost you untold dollars...I would tell you all the different times and ways I have learned this lesson, but this site doesen't have the bandwidth, and my fingers aren't strong enough to list them all. Trust an Old Coot on this one. Get a mechanic to listen to it. Don't try to drive it home.

if it was fine and not making the noise before you shut it off, it could be carbon knock.
A piece of carbon has fallen off one of the valve stems and is know on top of the piston, and when the piston comes up, it's hitting the cylinder head.
it can make quite a racket, and sound like a rod knock ( or even worse)
as mentioned above, oil mixing won't cause this condition, the noise that is.
If the engine had been using oil, carbon will build up on the valve stems. Just the vibration of the engine having been shut off/restarted can cause a piece to break loose and cause the noise.
You still need an experienced ear to help you, so take heed in the warning about not driving it until the source of the noise can be identified.
Carbon buildup can sometimes be removed by the application of an aerosol combustion chamber cleaner being applied thru the carb while the engine is running; you must follow the instructions on the can.

Just a quick update, I though more of the sound I was hearing the best way to describe it is like a Dirt Bike sound. Hopefully it is an easy thing to fix I still kinds gotta pay this thing off.

Like i said in this thread I was stupid and went mudding with the broken bracket and dug my exaust in to the mud this is the best picture that I could find of the connection to my manifold, I dont seem to have any power loss, I had to drive it to a place i could park it over night. but theis has been looking like this for about a week or so. I wish i had a picture of my actuall exhaust but it does hang down quite a bit but still feels solid when I tired to manualy adjust it.

FWIW, I would really, really, consider renting/borrowing a tow dolly or trailer, and take it home to inspect. You may only have an exhaust leak, or you may have a stuck valve. It could be any number of things, but if you want to use your money on something other than an engine rebuild, do not drive it home.
    Just my .02 worth.
Good luck and keep us posted.:coffee::coffee:

Well I am going after work to get the oil changed, and belive me i will be watching them closely as they do it, and see what it sounding like from there. I will have to drive it a couple more miles to get with in the distance of the free road side assistance iffin it still sounds fishy to me. I willl prolly just drop it off at a shop cuz I am leaving the area for a while and have them look at it and pick it up when i get paid for said travel.

Can a freind tow rope you the distance needed.

Running it may cause new expensive damage as stated.

Even paying for a tow to a closer road, would be cheaper than the damage you may do $$$$.

I used to have a old Nissan Pathfinder that got an exhaust leak from a rock puncturing the exhaust pipe. You might want to get underneath and check your exhaust.

How much oil pressure did it carry before the problem? My brother's 5 was running low pressure and finally had a lifter collapse and spit out a pushrod. made one heck of a noise.

I'm thinking the engine cleaning oil additive shluffed off a few decades of dormant crud and you clogged a hydraulic lifter, allowing it to collapse, and causing the pushrod to clank around. Just a theory, but it's the only thing I can imagine that correllates to your recent use of the additive.

Well I got her home, it drove fine, just loud. I came to the point where I needed to get it home, I am leaving town for about 3 weeks so I will mess with it then. A couple of guys I work with seem to think it is an exhaust leak and after looking at my manifold there appears to be a paice of my gaskette missing.

:beer:here to a cheap and easy fix.

Glad it worked out for ya. Took a chance and you won. Do yourself a favor for the time when you get back into town...before you leave, spray every bolt and nut on both the intake and exhaust mainifold with PB Blaster. A can of the stuff is about $5, and it really works to loosen rusted/corroded parts. The heat from the engine can almost weld exhaust fasteners together, a broken bolt in the head can turn a simple job into a nightmare. Use PB Blaster, NOT WD 40. WD doesen't work, simple as that. You or the mechanic will appreciate the little bit of effort now later. If you can find the time to spray every day over a two to three day period of time, all the better.
