Ok installed the solex yesterday afternoon and ran a fuel line to an boat gas tank, the cj fired right up and after about 30 seconds it seemed to sound like air coming from the carb. and it started to run like crap? shut down the engine and waited untill tonight to check the valve adjustment only adjusted the intake valve and tryed it again fired up and sounded like a brand new engine after about 30sec same crap?

    any ideas?

Do you have the choke hooked up propery? Sitting on the F-head the choke in the off position is forward.

Yes its all the way forward , have not had to choke it to start yet.

Billy, not questioning just trying to learn. Why would it not run rough at first. Do the plugs fire dfferently after they get warm?

Ok, we've eliminated the choke. Tell us more, does it idle? Good, bad? How about high speed, did you let it run more than 30 seconds after the valve adjustment? More details please, it's impossible to diagnose something that is only run 30 seconds.

The Champion J8c plugs foul really easy in my experience. So if he had issues with the last Carb or left the mixture enrichment valve on the Solex in the rich position chances are the plugs are fouled. I found this out the hard way.:hurrican:

Also when you go to adjust the solx make sure the eng is good and warm this also makes a difference.

No argument on the fouling, I've had them look fine but won't fire. Since it also smokes maybe it pumped enough oil to foul the plugs quickly?

how does it idle , after 30 sec the carb starts to sound like its spraying air, and then the idle starts going down and if you do not throttle it up it will die. all this time the smoke is getting pretty bad. And yes the plugs look bad removed them and cleaned them up with carb cleaner, reinstalled them and started it back up I let it run for about 10 mins giving it gas to keep it running, idles very slow and dies?

during the 10 mins I let it run I removed one plug wire at a time to see if I had a dead cylinder no change in the sound of the engine.

At this point gave up and went in the house.

glen I also thought about the oil pumping up in to the cylinders and causing this also?

Based on your description I doubt you'll ever get it running right till you tear into the engine. It does sound like it's pumping too much oil.

Ok pulled the head off, dropped the oil pan, and pulled out the #1 piston.

there is no ring groove and the rings are free and loose but the bevel on the inside of the rings How is it suppost to be turned up or down. Everything else looks great.

    Any idles .

Bevel goes up, but the bigger issue is the oil rings. How do they look? How does the cylinder look?

no signs of any damage on the cylinder walls dont look like they put the cross hatch on the walls before they installed the pistons .

As for the oil rings the gaps are not in a straight line they where off set about a 1/4 turn but thats all I know to look for any thing that I need to look at?

Do the rings have plenty of expansion/spring to them? I don't remember if you mentioned it, was the engine bored? Proper sized pistons used if so?

not really sure of the engine had been bore or not the compression rings looked like they had plenty of spring to them not sure about the oil rings.

Before you pulled the piston out did it look snug in the cylinder? Could you move it side to side at all, or can you move the others at all. Do the pistons have any numbers on top, like .010,.020,.030 etc?

had this happen to me ,rings were in the correct box but not the correct size, here is how i found out, remove the ring from the piston, put it in the cylinder, push it down into the normal area of travel with the piston then check to see how much of a gap is at the ends of the rings, cant rember what is accepttable but it isnt much of a gap, never had any luck puting a set of rings back in that were used at all, replace them, just my experience once you pull them out thats it they are trash
