Going from a single groove to a double groove crank for my PS. If I remember right, I put it at TDC, remove large bolt, slide off old pulley- slide on new pulley. Is that all beside removing belt prior I know. How do you remove the bolt without the crank turning?

    -Thanks

On inline 6 the pulley is held on with 3 or 4 5/16 bolts to the harmonic ballancer, you do not have to remove the large bolt.

Sorry to bump, but this is what I have come up with -

Remove inspection cover from Flywheel and jam flywheel while crank is at TDC. Remove large bolt from pulley, use tool to pry off pulley. Replace with twin groove set at TDC. ref photos above.

    thanks - D

Use a puller so you don't bend the puller, regardless of the pulley type. AMHIK.

Pry bar will not get the pully off. You will have to beg/borrow/steal/rent a pully puller to do it right. They are not that expensive and make quick work of that job.

You can lock the engine by putting it in high gear and choking the wheels good. Don't pry the hub off you will break something, borrow or buy a puller.

Most parts stores will either rent or loan you the correct puller or the job..

I prefer Autozone for the rental.
You just buy it, then keep it for however long you need it and then return for a full refund. I like it because they don't hassle you about how long you've rented the tool.

I have the tool - Harmonic balancer puller - should work and I think I still have all the parts/threads for it. My concern is one - keeping the engine @ TDC as I do this and getting the large bolt off the pulley. I can't get the air wrench in there unless I pull the radiator. I was looking for guidance on the removal of the pulley.

if you are just replacing the pully i do not see a need to keep it TDC. Unbolt the pully and use the puller to romve it. maybe take a marker and mark where it was on the crank but unless you are removing the distributer or timing chain it isnt gonig to affect it much. there is the mark on the pully for timing. so with the bolts holding it on there will be only say 4 differnt positions to bolt it on. Drive it out to my palvce tomorrow and i could probably hewlp you

You shouldn't need the zip gun, a breaker bar and maybe a piece of pipe over the handle should do it!

Yeah, maybe I'm thinking way to much into this. The pulley is outside the timing cover and chain so yes, it shouldn't have any effect on timing.

-Thanks DANSTEW, if I get in a jam I may PM you. Steering gear box is out while I make up some new lines to go from the pump - no driveability. I'll post back if I get some Jeep time today or Sunday.

Got it off, and the new one on. Thanks for the help. Now I have to shim the fan pulley and alternator to match. Timing marks are at different places on the two pulleys but i marked old prior.

Thanks again .... final test drive and pics to come soon. Off to paint the Kitchen. Booooooo
