Mike, I believe this is what you're getting at-

My concern with scheme 1 is that in event of a short to ground on the control part of the circuit that the switch & associated wiring may not be rated for the current required to blow the main fuse, thereby releasing the smoke out of the wiring causing it to stop working :(

Scheme 2 protects the control wiring & switch but if I were doing it I'd feed all the switch circuits from a dedicated fuse as in scheme 3 just to make the wiring easier.

I see where you are going Howard on figure 3, all the small fuses from fig 2 would be messy. The only problem with fig 3 is what happens when the switch for the heater fails and takes out your headlights? At least with figure 1 you only lose one circuit, not all of them.

This is actually an undocumented design feature Paul, when the headlights go out you know theres a problem with the heater :)

Then you do what any Real Man would do, rip out the heater & throw it in the ditch:twisted:

The right answer is carry a flashlight, need to see where you threw that heater. ;)

For you YJ guys that would be a square flashlight. (I got the square flashlight off a local board, it was pretty funny if you knew who it came from. )

Paul, (ducking) Why would someone with a YJ be reading messages on a JEEP forum???

Seriously (& oddly e'nuff, back on topic) I've never seen a switch fail by shorting to ground, can't really see it happening without some sort of massive physical insult. *

    Broken toggle doo-hickeys? Sure.

    Burned contacts? Of course.

    Short to ground? Nah. *

The main cause of shorts is abraded wire insulation, thats really what the fuse is there for. Now of course you can find lengths of wire that aren't protected, from the battery to the fuse panel being a prime example, but, hey, sometime you just gotta live dangerously:rofl:

    * Unless of course the switch was made by Lucas Electric.

    <Insert favourite Lucas joke here>

I don't know, ask Jerry or Jeepfreak. R)

Think Mike wants his post back?

My opinion is all 3 are sufficient, I just like #1. Mostly because that's what I did, and no fires from that side of the Jeep....yet. Of all the things that could go wrong with a Jeep build like my Jeepster, the only problem I had was a dead short. No other mechanical or wiring issues. I'd like to publicly blame GM for their mistake.

    Was this my thread? ;)

I was just sitting here grinning because I looked at my speedometer and realized I have the later replacement with 2 - count 'em 2 turn signal indicators (Left AND Right!), and I have the wires to run 'em! :)

This Jeep gets phancier all the time....

Question though, what did GM have to do with a short on a Jeepster? They just designed the motor... Jeep/Kaiser whoever did the wiring R)

I personally have never had good luck with relays, probably because I mounted them under the hood  But when you use them they sure do help with the wiring.

Make sure they're individually fused

I have a TBI 4.3. There is a fuel pump relay test wire that hangs out of the factory harness. It laid on the exhaust manifold, melted the end off and shorted. I was in the middle of no where, ended up feeding the whole thing with a piece of #10. Surprisingly Jeep didn't burn to the ground like I expected. Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. Drove the rest of the way with a pair of sidecutters in one hand, with the computer hanging out from under the dash with the #10 within reach. Better not do as I do.:oops:
