Hello all, this is my first posting, and of course it is because I am having "technical dificulties."

I have a ground-up restored (to original) 65 CJ-5 (F134) and I am in need of a new ignition coil (12v). The ones I have been seeing at the parts stores require an external resistor. The one I am replacing says "No external resistor required." Any idea where I can get a coil that does not require an external resistor? Or, how do I go about adding a resistor into the system? Thanks for any help.

    Welcome Kevin :).

First off- any autoparts store (we call'em FLAPS) should have an internal resister coil in stock. They're not a "popular" item but they are available, probably hid behind the counter somewheres. If that fails they're available from Walck's & many other Jeep parts suppliers, P/N is 649712.

I don't recommend it but if you want to go the external resister route there's two changes you have to make-

Obviously, first you have to add the resister. It goes into the wire that runs from the ignition switch to the + terminal of the coil (the - terminal goes to the distributer)

Secondly, you have to add another wire from coil's + terminal to the output terminal of the starter solinoid. This provides full battery voltage to the coil while starting for a hotter spark to get things going. Make sure it goes to the output of the solinoid or you'll find that, while it helps getting your Jeep started, it may not be so easy to get it stopped

    Good luck,

    H.

Thanks for all the great information Howard. I will be more specific when I ask for the part. Actually, maybe I will just order it from Walck's. I'd rather support a bona fide jeep parts supplier than the franchised entities.

Very nice Jeep you have there.
