I am about to reassemble my t90 and I have a quick question, stupid one but quick. What type of grease should I use or can I use petroluem jelly. I would love to use petroluem jelly so that to keep many hand as smooth as a babiy's bottomR) but I am sure there is a proper grease to use. Thanks Bob

Petroleum jelly is preferred, as it will dissolve in the gear lube later.
Grease will not dissolve in the gear lube, and has the potential to cause problems after assembly and use.

    Good luck!!

engine assembly lube will work too. might not be quite sticky enough for you depending on what you wanted though and it will dissolve in oil

    Update.

Well like always I kick myself for not taking any pictures. I am sure many of you have seen a t90 rebuild before, but seeing that this is my first, I am dam proud of it. First let me say that unlike many t90's I got mine in a box, yes a box. It had already been completely torn down, so other that Rick's rebuild guide and some shop drawings, I had nothing else for reference.

As it sits right now, I will get the mainshaft installed tonight and the rest of it assembled. The two problems have come up. First I had to grind down the oil collector a little because it was rubbing on the input gear, no biggie. The second, for some stupid reason my printer seemed to cut off step 4O, and 4P and next thing I know I have the synchronizer on and I am about to install the mainshaft, and I like what about second gear...doooooh. I like doing things for practice, but all is good now. But for those who are looking to do this rebuild it is alot of fun and sure is gratifying. I know I am not out of the woods yet, still need to finish and do the function check. I did use most of his tool ideas but I mainly used the lond dowl and alot of petoluem jelly on the needle bearings for the cluster gear and a short piece of conduit to gently push them all in, one group at a time, which worked well and I am confident there is plenty of initial lubrication there.

Like I said and was told by many, this has been fun. I have pretty good mechanical skills and have been around cars since about 11, but this is my first tranny rebuild. So now for me the whole "It's a Jeep Thing" is taking on a new meaning.

I'm just messin' with ya! I bought the video, and should have everything I need to do it. I've gotta get the rolling chassis done first, then split the engine/tranny/tcase all apart. While the engine parts are in the machine shop, then I'll attack the tranny and tcase. I need to get all the rebuild parts together first.

I felt the same way when I rebuilt my D18... it's really satisfying when you get it all back together and it works!! :)
Congratulations on your almost-completed rebuild!

Well I finished up last night. The function test went well, yeah. I mated the t-case to the tranny and all went well. Now I have to look at the silly parking brake, it sounds like there are rocks in thereR) Should be and easy fix. My brother-in-law is coming up to visit this weekend, he is the one I got the Jeep from. I think we will get the tranny/t-case mounted up to the engine. He was the one who tore into this project to begin with, so I think he will have a little satisfaction helping me with this, also knowing he gave the Jeep to the right person:D I am soooooo happy right now.
