I got an older winch from Coleman in uwharrie (thanks a bunch). And i got around to cleaning it up and testing things. Well all solenoids check out. I finally got a wiring schematic from warn (with a not so nice way of saying the winch is obsolete  ) But my question is i want to test the motor. It is a two post permenant magnet motor. I have been getting voltage to it, but no worky. Do i need to ground the motor to get it to work? I thoghut i did but nothing. Also if the motor is locked up will it cause the solenoids to get hot and smoke ;) :( so that happened to me and I will have to test out the solenoids again. Also WARN uses 3 solenoids. Two for power in, and one for power out, why do they use the 3rd solenoid? From lookngi at it, it seems i can get rid of one of the solenoids and just make the on/off switch goto the 2 remaining solenoids to make the winch power in and power out.

No you should not ground the motor. Polarity one way should spin it forward and reversing the polarity should spin it the other direction. IRRC. You want to keep the 3rd solenoid it splits the current through the two for power in so you don't burn them up. If you post the schematic maybe able to help more.

Here is the schematic. I wired and set it up to spec. When i tried to test the motor, nothing happened. And actually i could get the solinoids to even click last night. But at my bench at work i got all 3 solinoids to click. I will try the ground again tonight. But i am just not sure what smoked last night, i think it was a wire, but i have to recheck, becuase it was late last night when i was testing stuff. But here is a schematic. On my current setup on my bellview winch i have only 1 solinoid and it works fine.

checked again tonight, the motor is burned out. i opened up the case and saw some melted windings and it just smelled burned. So i will probably try to get it rebuilt.

Just a thought regarding the motor not spinning...is the brake on the winch stuck on or jammed? How about bench testing the motor only?

Edit: This is what happens when you sit in front of the computer pondering things...the problem is solved before you click "Post"...

Keep us posted. By the way, what model Warn is it??

Yeah nothing jammed on it. I pulled it all apart and it is clean just have to clean off some old congeeled grease and put it back together.

The model warn is an m6000. It is an early one with the 2 post motor. It resembles the newer warn winches, not like my old Bellview m6000 winch :)
