I have a 1974 CJ5, 304, T18 (4.03-1) with 3:73 gears, detroit in rear (D44), soft lock up front (D30). My question is can I use my current carriers and drop to 4:10 gears or do I have to change carriers? I really don't want to get rid of the detriot!
    Thanks a ton!

The 30 you can use the 3.73 carrier for the 4.10 gears. The 44 will require a new carrier or in this case a new detroit. That one will not work with 4.10s.

They make deeper gears that are for that carrier. I have a set of 4.10's I'm going to install in mine on a 3.54 detroit. I know they make 4.10's and 4.88's but don't know if they make others.

I bought the Yukon kit from a guy on Ebay. Going from 3.73 to 4.56
The kit lolks good. New bearings, tracing paste, carrier for the 44, pretty good instructions. Putting it in a 74 cj5 with a 232. Also bought the MC2100 carb and 2 barrel adaptor plate...JEEP Just Empy Every Pocket

Almost anyone who sells gears has thick 4:10 gears available for a dana 44. Just ask for a thick ring gear.

How do you tell if you have a 3:73 and up, or a 3:73 and down carrier? I checked with the site listed above and they sell gears with the thick ring gear, but it also says use with 3:73 and down (or up) carrier.

There is no 3.73 and up carrier for the 44. If you look at the second link I posted above, it has a list of carrier breaks. IIRC it's 3.92 and up, or 3.73 and down. Up and down refer to the numeric value of the gear ratio. Down is smaller numbers (ie 3.54, 3.31, 3.07, etc) and up is larger (4.10, 4.27, etc).

You can get around the carrier break by using the thick gear - but the original design from Dana would enforce the carrier break, and the "up" gears would not fit on the "down" case.

    hth!

OK, so I can use the 4:10's or go to the 4:56's by using the carrier I currently have by using the thick ring gear right?
