Heat riser

    Has anyone had any great discoveries since this old thread? I just got a call from my mechanic saying the vavlve clatter I was hearing on the passenger side valve cover, is actually the heat riser. And he is having trouble finding one. So, what should I do. It does get a little cold in Kansas, but I have an engine heater that helps with that aspect when a plug-in is available.

    I have no clue what to tell him, so I leave it up to you guys.

    I think I'd give Walck's a call. BTW- The heat riser doesn't directly affect how your heater works, but it sure will affect how well your jeep runs in the cold! It just holds back some exhaust gas to warm the engine up sooner, after which the bi-metal spring opens up and allows the damper to open all the way.

    I rebuilt mine on the L-4 when I had it apart. This is definitely one of those jobs that is much, much easier to accomplish with the part OUT of the car! ;)

    couple part numbers you can try through your local GM dealer:

    136 9986 shown for CJ V6 models

    138 2680 (old # 137 5918) shown for Jeepster V6

    don't know what the differences would be.
    try numbers to see if still available or superceeded through GM dealer

    FWIW Dutch is extremely cold blooded, in large part due to removing the heat riser and having no working choke.

    Any chance this may work? Don't these models have a Dauntless standard or optional? I remember the electra on the list of V6 donors.

    Cool site. I have that same air breather and was thinking a while back I might have to replace that thing that opens and closes the flap inside the air breather. I think they call it a vacuum motor or something like that.

    As far as the heat riser working, it doesn't show a picture so I couldn't guess.

    Thanks for the numbers Jim. No luck though. Seems they don't stand behind their 36 year old products that changed manufacturers. What is this world coming to? I may just live with it for now if I the mechanic doesn't think it will get stuck closed.

    I know that cold-blooded feeling Boyink. I will consider myself lucky that my choke works......and I don't live in Michigan.

    For those salvage hounds, please keep me in mind the next time you are at a Jeep graveyard. I'll take a heat riser valve if not too much trouble. ;)

    Mike if the housing is okay and not cracked or broken, or leaking exhaust, you could just wire it open for now.

    Um, I think the bigger Buicks such as those listed would have had the big-block engines like the 425-455 no? These would have had a 2- or 2 1/4-inch header pipe. Check it out before you spend that kind of ching.

    I remembered the Buick's had the 225 (231) a few years before and after '67-'69 that as soon as I posted the message. A little brain fart. Do you think a '63-66 or '75-77 buick would be a potential source? (If I can't find one for or off of another Jeep)

    Jim, that's what I decided once I thought a little more. I was just hoping you guys could give me quick inspiration while the mechanic has it.

    Mike I remember a GM box with a heat riser sitting in it out in my dads junk(parts). Let me look tomorrow and see what it is or what it fits. The only other reason I can think I would have it would be for a Buick 350, which would be different yet.

    Mike I found the heat riser valve: P/N 1387452 which is for Buick 350 (in Jeeps)
    You might see if local dealer can still get it or has it so you can comare. I don't know what the difference would be; bolt pattern, hole diam, etc. This also has the donut built onto it. Without both V8 and V6 manifolds in front of me, I can do no more at this time

    In the old days, we just took them out or wired them open. We normally had a manual choke to keep the revs up until the engine was warm. Works great and doesn't hurt anything.

    For archival purposes, I wanted to share my final (hopefully) heat riser episode. I wired mine open through the spring and summer months this year and put it in the back of my mind. Until.... I was playing around on Ebay last month and saw this on a search accidently.

    I was going to purchase this one on ebay just to give it a shot, but the bidding went higher than I cared to go. So, I wrote down the part number, 1386476, and searched on the internet a little. I found this site on accident by searching for a GM parts number database:

    They happened to have 2 of 1386476 on hand at half the cost of the ebay winning bid ($34). So, I bought it. Those guys were faster than anyone I have ever dealt with, and the part was reasonably priced, especially for NOS. I found the same part at a few other online NOS places for ~$70-130 dollars.

    I figured the worst I could do if it did not match the original was double my money on ebay. I just installed it today and it went on perfectly. The exact same pattern and size as the original. Between the HEI, carb rebuild, and this thing I am finally over my cold-starting issues. I still have to choke it, but at least it only takes one turn of the key ;)
