As you know, I have a 1964 CJ5 with a twin stick. Well my question is: Is there something blocking me from putting my Jeep into two wheel low range? I can not seem to get it to go into two low.

By the way, as far as I know, it's a stock trans and transfer case with stock twin stick.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, the interlock pill between the shift levers inside the front housing. If you remove this pill it will then shift into 2wd low.
This is a common upgrade when guys rebuild the dana 18.

Is there a parts breakdown for this somewhere? I don't want to go in there blind.

And thanks for the help. :)

why change it,if its in low and the hubs are locked"if equipped with lock out hubs" you are fail safe when in low you are defenitly in 4wd,if it has lock out hubs and they are locked out you are the same as in 2wd low as far as power transfer

I wanted to have the option of having 2wd low when the hubs are not locked in. As in having a kind of granny gear when in 2wd

That's what he meant, if the hubs aren't locked you would basically have 2 wd low range. Just remember that the torque is all going to the rear axle in that case, so even with a 4 cylinder you could easily break something in the rear. Just to clarify, what we mean is you can put it in 4wd, low range without the hubs locked in and have 2wd low range.

I didn't remove the "pill" when I rebuilt my D18 and regretted it later. I just removed it last winter. There are times when the hubs are locked and I don't need or want 4wd, but low range is usefull. I've found that I use 2wd low quite a bit. But it requires judicious use of the skinny pedal. Especially if you are running a V8 and you still have the tapered rear axles. I don't believe that they were designed for the amount of torque you can apply to them in 2 low. If you are carefull, should be no problem. I'm sure there is a write-up in the Tech section here on how to do it. Plan on spending a full day to get it done. I took my T case out to do some other work too, but it can be done with it still in the vehicle.

I use the 2wd low when I'm backing out of a parking spot, or when parallel parking.
